Safety - Be in The Know!

  • Remember, you do not have to talk to someone if you do not want to. All you need to do is click on the ignore button if you no longer wish to hear from a user.
  • It is wise to find out a bit about who you are talking to before you get into private conversations with them. Use their profile in the chat room to find out what they say about themselves and use the profile link to view their GYC profile page. Remember: people do not always tell the truth about who they are, that is why it is wise not to become too involved with people you meet in chat rooms.
  • If you ever feel threatened or offended by an event in the chat rooms, do not hesitate to let us know by reporting abuse online, or by contacting one of the chat room moderators.
  • We keep monitor the chat room closely: cybering, spamming, harassment, fraud, lying about your age, bullying and racism are all against the rules of the gyc chat room. You will be banned if you do not adhere to the rules.

Chat Room Command

There are a number of chat room commands (text which, when typed in to the chat room, have a particular effect) which will make your chat room experience more easy.

/clear - Clears all text in the chat window.
/who - Gives you a list of all users on the system and what rooms they are in.
/me {action text} - Create your own custom emotion.
/whois {nickname} - Shows details about someone.
/msg {nickname} {message} - Sends a private message to this user without opening a private window.
/join {room} or /goto {room} - Join a specified room.
/ping - Pings the server and prints out the round trip.
/echo {line} - Simply displays the line without sending it to server.
/away, /back - Performs the same action as the away button.

Our Moderators will use the following set of commands to keep things in check:

/pass [special password] - to become a mod

/user - to become a regular user, again.

/warn {user} - Warn a user about their actions.
/freeze {user} - Prohibit a user from changing rooms and chatting.
/kick {user} - Kick a user out of the chat.
/ban {user} - Temporarily ban a user's host (ip).
/info {user} - Display user information including an IP address.

/broadcast {message} - Broadcast a message to all users in all rooms. You can also press [Ctrl+Shift+Enter] on the keyboard.

DO NOT ASK TO BE ASSIGNED OPERATOR STATUS. YOU WILL NEED TO APPLY

/moderate - Moderate a channel; see the Moderator plug-in section for details. For administrators.

The Tabs

  • Chat Tab
This tab contains the main window where chat messages appear.

  • Rooms Tab
You can chat in various rooms on RealChat. Each room has a particular topic or genre that you may wish to chat about. The Rooms Tab displays a list of all available rooms followed by the subject of that room and the number of users in there. Simply select the room you wish to join and click Change Room. Users are also permitted to create their own custom rooms. You can create your own room by clicking New Room, typing the room Name & Topic in the text areas, and then clicking OK. Optionally, you can also enter a password to allow only selected people to enter. Note that user rooms that others have created that require a password to enter appear as ## 101 ##, ## 102 ##, ## 103 ##, and so forth. To enter one of these rooms, you will need to know the password that the person specified when they created the room.

  • Settings Tab
From this tab, you can specify various options on how the chat room looks, feels, and sounds. Please note that any changes you make here apply only to you; the changes do not affect the way others see any text you may type.

  • Profile Tab
From this tab, you can add or update information about yourself that you want to share with others. Clicking the Apply button will announce your profile to the chat server and will, on some browsers, save the information so that you won't need to enter it again the next time that you log in. Note that your chat administrator can disable this feature.

What do you need?

RealChat Client is a Java applet that can be accessed with any Java-enabled browser, such as Internet Explorer, Opera, Safari, Mozilla, Netscape Communicator 6 and higher. For the best experience, we recommend that you upgrade to the latest browser version available.

For the best experience, we strongly recommend that you get the latest version of Sun's Java plug-in. Microsoft's obsolete Java implementations are *not* 100% Java-compatible and may cause connection problems and lock-ups. Sun Microsystems is the creator of Java, and their free plug-in will let you enjoy the best of RealChat, and other Java applications as well!

Not Working?

There are a number of reasons why the chat room may not be working...

  • Many schools and Universities use what is called a PROXY server to connect you to the chat room. This means you cannot make a direct connection to the chat room and so will need to find a regular internet connection.
  • You may be blocked from using the chat room
  • You may not have Java installed on your local computer. Use the Java link above to install it, or get the computer admin (parent etc.) to do so. Java is a standard component and we recommend that you have it installed anyway
