It's a tragic decision, but sometimes it's necessary: if all the pro-life advocates who counted militantly the number of babies aborted each year would also dedicate their time to counting the number of womens' lives saved because of these abortions, they might sing a different tune.
"Our country is founded on a sham: our forefathers were slave-owning rich white guys who wanted it their way. So when I see the American flag, I go, 'Oh my God, you're insulting me.' That you can have a gay parade on Christopher Street in New York, with naked men and women on a float cheering, 'We're here, we're queer!' -- that's what makes my heart swell. Not the flag, but a gay naked man or woman burning the flag. I get choked up with pride."

I am no longer religious at ALL, but I still don't understand the logic of how it's all about a woman's choice or whatnot. Yes, the woman's body is affected by pregnancy, but for the baby, it's their entire life, not just their abdomen.
From a biological standpoint, it doesn't make sense. It's a perfectly healthy living thing on it's way to becoming a person. If the mother or the baby somehow has their health threatened, that's one thing, but otherwise it's medically unsound to remove anything that's functioning healthily (sounds like cosmetic surgery).
If you don't want or can't take care of the damn kid, this is what adoption is for. There are literally thousands of couples waiting to adopt (haha, you knew that, cuz we make up a lot of the "market"). Otherwise the only thing I could see as being a woman's body is the long-term vaginal stretching from giving birth if it's your first birth. Sorry, but tough toenails. Beauty of a little-seen region of your body is not worth ending a developing life.
As for the sperm, killing thousands of babies when you wank arguement: Sperm, by nature, are destined to likely die. But once they are actually in the process of developing a life, and it's working, it's kind of odd for it to be a matter of choice to just say "ok, let's end this process that we just started". Even if they're raped, again, I say if it's not a health issue for the woman it's a beauty one. I hate to say tough toenails to a woman who got raped and now she'll have stretchmarks when she didn't choose to have sex, but that's not really worth the life of a child that can be raised by adoptive parents.
Everyone thinks that all pro-lifers are religious. I'm not a pro-lifer (I believe in the death penalty and that the world is overpopulated with humans), but I don't believe it's just about "a woman's body" and us evil, horned ( ) men trying to take away their rights. If you wanna abort your own body, go for it! But just because something's growing inside you doesn't mean you make all the decisions about it on a whim.

*So for practical purposes, I think abortion does help balance the population (although potential adopters go wanting, i suppose), but my point is, this "woman's body" arguement is out-of-perspective bullshit, as well as the idea that we're just being spiritualistic in saying it's a human being once it aquires a full set of chromosomes...it's medico-ethically unsound, unnatural (this, however, doesn't mean it's wrong), and it's bad economics with the adoption "industry". Good population balancer, though.*

Love those pics.
I get bored of this topic though, argued for choice so many times before, usually bringing up the nature of a human being, what constitutes a human being etc... among other things, such as the state should not have the right to tell someone what they can and can't do with their body.

I'm not sure if anyone has ever heard of this here, but there is a famous thought experiment called "the violinist" in which you are suppose to imagine a situation where you wake up and have been subject to a medical procedure against your will in which someone has surgically attached a famous violinist to your body because he needs to use your kidneys. Now this process is not going to be forever and after nine months he can be removed, but until then you are stuck with him. The question is whether he was a right to us your body for any amount of time?

I also noticed the idea of abortion being just about physical appearance, but there is also mental health that should be considered, and especially in the case of rape just carrying the baby for 9 months can really mentally damage the rape victim.

It is possible that I have argued to be for abortion in the case of rape and nothing else, but if that is so it's a start. I personally think situation and circumstance should be the major reasons for or against abortion, such as cases of repeat abortions simply because they don't want to use protection (it does happen) is wrong. OTher ones it's more gray.

I thing abortion is wrong wrong wrong!
Its just so awful.
If someones dog got pregnant accidently and the owner did not have enough money or enough space to have the puppies they wouldn't take it to the vets and get them sucked out while they were still alive!!!! The very idea offends most people but people still think its okay to do in humans!!
I know its a poor comparison but still, if we wouldn't do it to animals why do it to ourselves!
I think to reduce the number of abortion in this world we should force under 21s on contraceptives.
The implant lasts 3 years, stick that in their arms and solve the problem before it begins! Prevention is better than cure

My opinion is pretty much a collaboration of other peoples (who have posted here), in fact it changed after I read some of the posts.
I came here with the intention to bag abortion out and say "hell no"! But I changed my mind, I think we should keep abortion but it shouldn't be easy to get one. I have no idea of the abortion process but I think the potential mother should be spoken to (possibly counselled/educated) before the procedure takes place. She should be given all sorts of options (adoptions etc.). As we all saw in Juno pregnancy can be hawt and fun.
A little note, wouldn't it be nice if every aborted baby went to a gay couple; there'd be more than enough to go around =P (a flawed statement but a nice one all the same).
A second note, I wonder if the number of abortions will go down, now that pregnancy is seen as cool (all the celebs are doing it).

it often boils down to fecundity.

are you prepared to weigh pleasure/happiness you might have in the future over the happiness you have now?

We're already struggling with the amount of humans on the planet as it is. We at least need some down time until we get infrastructure improved.
