i was walking through the common room the other day and i overheard some people talking about gay sex. one of them said that it was unnatural and disgusting and made them feel sick.
i felt really uncomfortable and angry.
it upsets me that such casual homophobia still exists in schools, and this is from 16 year olds

What tends to annoy me is when people constantly have to use the word Gay to mean crappy or of low quality or something that sucks. Seriously, we are in high school, can't we come up with something a bit more eloquent than "Dude that test was gay"

The unnatural arguement is flawed.
1) Nature is good. 2) Things not of nature are bad. 3) Therefore unnatural is bad.
However:
4) I live in a house. 5) Houses are not found in nature. 6) Therefore houses are bad.
Then of course:
7) A person is homosexual. 8) Homosexuality has been documented in thousands of species and cultures. 9) Therefore, Homosexuality is nature. 10) Therefore Homosexuality is good.
And let's not forget:
11) Murder is natural amongst certain primapes. 12) Therefore murder is natural. 13) Therefore murder is good.
So to conclude, if you hold his mode of ethics to be true you could always live in a tree, continue to be homosexual, and then put a knife in his back.
Let's examine his other reasons.
1) Things that make me feel sick are disgusting. 2) Disgusting things are bad. 3) Homosexuality makes me feel sick. 4) Therefore Homosexuality is disgusting. 5) Therefore Homosexuality is bad. 6) Therefore Homosexuality is unethical. 7) Therefore Homosexuality should not exist.
Meaning:
8) Brussel sprouts make me feel sick. 9) Therefore brussel sprouts are bad. 10) Therefore brussel sprouts are unethical. 11) Therefore brussel sprouts should not exist.
Also meaning:
12) Some people like brussel sprouts. 13) Therefore those people are unethical. 14) Therefore those people should not exist.
So we throw in this arguement:
15) Life is valuable. 16) Therefore life should not be squandered. 17) Therefore we should not murder.
As well as:
18) People have a right to choose as long as they don't hurt anyone else. 19) People consuming brussel sprouts/being homosexual doesn't harm me. 20) Therefore it's none of my business.
So if that guy has an issue with brussel spouts, I fear for anyone sitting around his table come Christmas. It'll be a complete bloodbath.
As for the "gay" as slang for "bad", I correct people when they use it. Just say "bad" whenever they say "gay", but no more. They get so fed up with it they jsut start saying "bad" instead.

When people use the word 'gay' as a negative term it also really annoys me. So many people that I know and go to school with do it, and they say it when I am there as well. However when they do, I do correct them on what they are saying. After talking to most of them about it, they dont actually realise they are doing it, which is also very annoying because they have got so used to saying it as a negative term. With all my best mates being straight they often forget that I am not. Sometimes they tend to make snide remarks about people being gay or bisexual, which really upsets me alot knowing that they say that but then say they support me and who I am. At school sometimes I feel very uncomfortable around the girls who are talking about lesbians because I know that most of them, especially if I don't really know them that well, because I know that they are going to say something negative about it, which in most cases they do, normally 'flithy dirty lesbians' but it varies. Even if I am not envolved in the convesation, I do say something, even if its that if they have that opinion they should be respectful of others who don't, and keep it to themselves. x// didz //x

Yeah, I can see why that would piss any queer off. Man, there are some REAL jerks in high school >_< Sorry you have to deal with it. If you're out, I'd say tell 'em off. If your in, I'd say get your anger out throughm usic or writing... or whatever helps you get your anger out xD But, yeah, don't let those jack*sses get you down. They're unintelligent fools who deem their beliefs are the be-all and end-all of everything. What scum!
Kanae- That was a really good post. I thouroughly enjoyed reading it. It's very accurate too xD "What's the point of being crazy if you can't have a little fun with it?" -John Nash, A Beautiful Mind

My word, I seem to be in opposition to everyone today!
No, it's not our job just to "take it". Yes, there are some prats in schools who do this sort of thing, and a lot of them are beyond help because rather than use reason, which is what I have displayed in my initial post, they leap to mindless superstition. It is our job to point out the flaws in arguements against homosexuality from an objective veiwpoint so there can be not doubt that homophobia is unethical. A certain amount of this generation may be lost to idiocy, but they aren't entirely beyond hope and we may loose less next generation. We need to work toward social change.
Also, I have a sence of humour and I'll allow the use of the term "gay" in reference to me but not "queer", even if it is a more quaint term. I tend to lean toward "homosexual" to downplay my sexuality's role in my personality. It's just a preference and a paradigm, to me.

Well, I guess it's part of life, some may take the abuse, some may not.In the end people these days are so small minded i doubt it would make any difference if some stranger came up to you, called you a gay lord, and you said, something along the lines of "There is nothing wrong with being gay, homophobia is idiotic and should be shot" wouldn't really affect them.
Im only speaking of my area of the UK though. Even though the homophobia is kinda bad, I dont think that this generation actually hates gays. In groups, like most kids, they show off, and if there is a target, they will attack to make themselves look good. Im sure you have all put someone else down for something.
Another thing, the word gay.. meh, doesnt bother me, im not gay, im me.. those that know me.. are honoured. those that call me gay.. are retarded? Like most words in this generation, they have just became words. there is no meaning now for the words. "fuck" "bastard", I cant understand people getting upset about it, but ive just noticed that if you return the abuse they don't become passive around you, as you give yourself a more dominant stature. Some may become aggressive but then you just put them down a little more and call them gay ! woot. see it solves all.
Since I am "gay" (me really) I get funny looks, as I dont try and hide the fact that I am gay, I talk about lads, I do what the fuck I like to do. I wouldnt say Im camp:o! but... It's just obvious in my attitude that I am gay so it doesn't bother me at all ^_^
hope me rambling on has kinda helped to show that having your own opinion to the matter of being called gay is just to the person who is being called the word gay, and if they had a problem with it then they should deal with it the correct manner!

I prefer to use the legitimate system of the school: no-one expects it to actually work on them, so when it does it has a much greater impact. But mostly these people I can deal with myself: I can just adopt a near-techer persona when I tell off young kids, and with people my own age I can easily point out the flaw in their logic, to the point where they get so fed up with it that they start avoiding it from then on, and in once case I had a pretty big and angry rant about it at one chap who has since bucked himself up a lot. I pointed out how he was picked on when he was younger for being of Irish decent, so I think that he now has a much more reasoned idea of how to act.

Okay.
So why did you name this casual insults? They weren't insulting you, they were talking about people like you behind your back... just, kind of to your face
If they want to dislike and question homosexuality, well then that's their perogative, but people that go by the 'it's unnatural' crap, like Kanae has pointed out, need to take a good look at their hands and masturbatory habits.
In fact, if that is what they said then I think that's actually quite well presented for 16yos. It was usually, "fuckin' queers, stay out of the bog ya fuckers" when I was that age. Hey, progress LOL You should always respect one's religious beliefs, however imaginary friends, delusional behaviour, a belief in a two thousand year old folk-lore should be treated by a professional.

Well, they were say that it was a sin and that any one who is gay or les will go to hell. I was so mad that I shouted out "Well you know what then I'm going to hell, See ya there!" They didn't know what I was talking about cause as they said I act like I'm such a goodie goodie. Can't you be a good person and be Les? Come on now!
