Heh.

When someone refers to what someone else is wearing, or something about the way they look as 'gay' - without meaning camp or anything, just meaning 'not cool' - one of the queerlings in my group will just be like "No. No it's not. I wouldn't be caught dead in that."

My friends and i have been friends since before we even knew what sexuality was, let alone what ours all were. So, for there to be at least 6 queers amongst us (and i know i'm forgetting a few... eek some friend i am) it's pretty cool. (Queer here isn't an offensive word either).. and some of the straight kids have gay parents and siblings...

When people say 'gay' they don't mean 'gay'. They're completely different words these days. Seriously. The use of the term 'gay' as meaning 'homosexual' became prevalent in the 1940s by the underground homosexuals so they could find each other without getting shot (or some other equivalent) by the rest of the world. Then, the world found out, world wasn't happy, 'gay' started to be used in a not-nice way.. then, 'gay' as a negative word just started to mean 'not cool' and as a label 'homosexual' and in its original form it sort of just died. Really.

Do the seven-year-olds saying "That's gay!" really know what 'gay' means to our community? No. They might have some understanding, but not a very good one.

i've even noticed in the chat rooms that GYC users say 'that's gay' about something uncool...

Obviously many people don't link the two meanings (well, three, but 'happy' just so does not count anymore) together anymore.

I think it's funny. I just smile and stare at them slightly when they realize their mistake

I got ONLY str8 friends (yeah, it sux) but in my companies I'm the one that uses the expression "that's gay". I thnik it is interesting because I use it to describe stereotypical stuff that are not gay just to show the fellows that nothnig must be judged from the outside. Nobody else uses it, I don't know why but surely not out of respect for gays. I don't take it offensively as an expression.

Generally I have no problem with my str8 friends, just when they think they can brainwash me and change me. It seldomly happens but when it does I feel mad...

I just ignore them these days. Some people will never change! Especially their level of ignorance.

I agree. The meaning of the word Gay has been twisted and morphed throughout the years. It no longer means homosexual, but something that is supid/bad. Just for a little personal story in here.
I have gotten most of my friends to stop saying it, cause it does offend me, but one of my friends persists. One time she said something was gay, just to see the outcome i aggreed with her. and she laughed. yep never coming out to her
You love me... you know you do. and if you dont.... I WILL MAKE YOU!!

Yeh this is something that bugs me too. I don't mind if it's used literally but when friends of mine say stuff like; 'my phone's being gay' it does piss me off because it's giving our identity a bad connatation that it shouldn't have.

Most of my friends who know I'm gay will make an effort but one very close friend who doesn't know I'm gay uses it to the point of excess, I've hinted to him to cut down but he's made it habitual. It hasn't yet occured to him that maybe the reason it bothers me is because I'm gay but then it wouldn't (I had to tell him the Scissor Sisters were gay).

It bothered me for like a few days after I came out back in Feb but then after that I just went back to feeling how I had before, doesn't bother me in the slightest. What bothers me is when one of my mates says it and then turns the conversation into one about me cause I'm gay and high fiving me or whatever cause I'm gay or cause I like bumming people or whatever she comes out with, true or otherwise. That I find dreadfully annoying. Use of the word in a negative way doesn't bother me much cause I know the intent is completely different.

Well me mates know about me... And it's kinda just out of force of habit... Not derogatory... And I find that even I myself use gay as an ill term as well. Meh though. So long as it's not done to offend, I don't see anything wrong with it.

Oh they used to say it, and I argued with them about why they shouldn't say it and got all pissed off about it. They don't do so anymore, and if anyone else outside of my friends group says it, I just give them the evils...
