im wondering how other people feel about parents trying to "correct" a childs sexuality. Either by sending them to a residential placement(like my parents did) or by any other sick and twisted way that they can think of. If you were sent to a facility, you can share your story here and get some advice on how to cope with the problems it caused you.(if it caused any) or you can give others advice who have been in your situation. dramatic Zac

wow, thats wow i mean i dont even know what to say to that. the serious psycological reppercussions that could come out of that is just OMG. i mean suppression of homosexual feelings could end up in pedophelia, hate crimes, scuicide, just bad

OK first off if you're parent did this they have bad parenting skills, second... a parent should support that not change it in the most sickest way posible, third that illegal and OF COURSE those places brake laws to torment they're residentualls, fourth hang in there man, dont give up when ur 18 u have RIGHTS to leave it, if they keep u there that long, and fith... im sry but thats off the charts in extreeme, ive been there at any moment and time to what most go threw and im young, to young. i hang in using my own willpower and sanity, but my mom isnt gona do that to me, altho i still havent told her im gay, i know what she would say and thats cool, because i have ESP. but i KNOW she will end up telling the family, and theres some straight up assholes in my family BELIEVE me, but im here to say this if that is true what u typed man, id say the ONLY option is to make a run for it. im very intellegent even though this may hurt you're feelings and others its for the best because when it all comes down to it when you're ready u could go back.
to be honost, its a Lion King sequal, except without deaths, only running from you're past lol.. but like i said if thats true dont give up.

well if a parent can't accept their child for being gay or whatever they are, they don't DESERVE to be parents
I have doubts whether my father would accept me if he knew, but in my opinion he shouldn't have been a parent in the first place :B

Ive never been in that situation. My dad accepted me for who I am. But I do think that parents need to let their kids be the way they are. You cant change them, only confuse them. If your kids gay, be happy for them and offer them support. Don't be like the bullies at school.

I hate it! I tried to come out to my my mom and she said that "Wait in time and figure it that you are truly gay or not." if I tell that to my dad he can't accept that knowingly that he hates my guts, I could never have the strength to pursue that in order to come out. I do have a long way to go, but I already have boyfriends that my mom and dad does not know yet. I love them very much But even thought, parents are sometimes harsh just like my dad, so advice to come out: Start with the one that loves you for who you are.

I think its natural for your parents to be worried, Mine where. I think its more down to the fact that they think your going to get bullied or teased or generaly put down rather than pure spite not wanting any gay children. Although i guess in some cases parents realy cant stand having a gay child. wich is realy sad.
I think its wrong if parents try and change the Sexual oreintation of their child, its got nothing too do with them. They should except you for who you are and be happy for you and SUPPORT you.
My mate just walked past and saw what Dramaqueen 17 wrote and he said and i quote "Thats appalling , why would your parents do something like that". SO parents butt out...

yeah, it's weird, i had a bit of trouble with my family before i came out to them but now, after i came out to them, things have gotten so much more out of hand. now every day is a battle, yes a battle, against my folks. this makes me agrivated and for me cause depression and suicidal ness. the thought of suicide crossed my mind only once, now my head is filled with thoughts of running away.

coming from a country like Cyprus, where being gay is not just frowned upon, but you are considered as a curse to the family, a disgrace to the people who ever knew you and a mental psycho in need of treatment, i can share some knowledge. A friend of mine, one of the few ones in Cyprus who has the balls to join the Gay Community, now 25, told me this some months ago as we were talking. He comes from a little town in the suburbs of Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus. He realized he was gay at the age of 14, although he was not flamboyant and you would have never guessed he was gay.
He came out to his friends at the age of 16, and the word was spread around enough that his folks found out. Their actions were the following:
1. Tried to talk him out and convince him that he is not gay, and he cannot be gay since he had girlfriends before
2. Tried to blame it on the fact that he had a pound or two more weight (really, not even overweight, just had some fat), and took him to a dietitian, so that he can lose weight and be interested in girls. The result was that he lost weight but -of course - did not change his mind.
3. They took him to a psychiatrist, not even a psychologist, because they believed that with proper medication and some medical care, he would turn straight!!!
4. When nothing worked, and saw that he was gay and as gay as one can be, they decided to take him to church, and instead, they called the priest to come to his house and perform exorcism on him as if he had been possessed by some kind of demons!!!
After all that, they had to accept his sexuality, in the end. Only thing is... he accepted to undergo everything coz he was enjoying all the procedure.

When you told me cyprus was a place where it was frowned upon I never knew you meant THAT much! (Having parents who are practicaly from there themself won't be easy telling them about me). I mean I understand that it's frowned upon but the exorcism thing is a BIT extreme , but taking the info that he was 16 at the time (like 9 years ago), it was a lot different then than it is now....still bad though

Psychological studies (The Practice and Ethics of Sexual Orientation Conversion Therapy. Haldman, Douglas C. Journal of Counseling and Clinical Psychology. 1994) state that reorientation is virtually impossible and has never been accomplished with persons identifying 5 or 6 on the Kinsley scale. I think that any parent trying to force their kids into these kinds of therapies should be prosecuted. Especially since these therapies tend to do more harm than good. People leaving conversion therapies tend to become increasingly depressed and confused. Everyone's saying that they've got the answer; but hope is deceiving, it spreads like a cancer.

My parents and/or family probably wouldn't want me gone. They would just disown me in the sense that they would have no sense of respect for me. Which is why they're never going to know. @_@ At least no time soon. Maybe once I get a little older and actually move out.
