I think that they should start teaching kids about people being gay as early as possible. I think that it should be introduced in fourth grade. If kids start seeing being gay as normal, then it will not be able to be used as an insult, and it would be one of those "undiscussable" subjects among kids. There are more and more teens that are coming out earlier and earlier, I came out when I was 13. I think that people should come out young. We are inteligent boys, and we need to fix this problem. Although I agree that having it introduced early will help, I think it may be the case that grade four may still be a bit late. If kids see it as normal from very young, i.e. they see both homosexual and heterosexual couples around for their entire life, then it should not be an issue like it is now. Love is love and whether it is for the same or another sex, or both that shouldn't be an issue from the get go. Shawn"Dragon_14"

I think we should teach kids at a younger age the gay alternative to safe sex and all that, it would probably help reduce homophobic behaviour in children as well as helping kids who are gay not feel so isolated in that area. However, parents might not like the idea of their child being taught about such a taboo subject, regardless of their child's sexuality. We should look at them first to change things.

yeah, it would be great to teach them at a younger age but even after section 24 (the one that prohibited promoting sexuality) was abolished three years ago teachers still won't teach about it. they say that teaching it is promoting it & that they can't do that according to them anyway. whatever way we try & do things we're going to have to struggle with it a lot.

I think that that should be taught in schools. Everything I know I had to find, and those who are in the closet and dont want people to find out can't just ask questions. There is a lot extra about being gay (such as the N-9 in condoms) that should be taught in school. My new years resolution: Come out.

sex education in school is not took as a serious thing and doesnt have a lot of time talking about it there are loads of isues around sex education and it should be made a lesson in its own subject so we all can understand every thing about it

Homosexuality is part of my school's curriculum (i dont think i spelt that correctly). A bunch of people were sent out of the class for being immature, but a majority of the kids didnt mind, and it rele did help me nd my friend way back when we werent out, lol.

I guess my school seems to be relatively accepting to gay people, not that I freely advertise my sexuality to everyone but there are several people I know who are gay and they make it quite plain and obvious. But still, there are a huge number of people who are not accepting of it, students, not teachers. 'disgracefulx' mentioned something about people saying "That's so gay", and my English teacher last year had something to say about that to a classmate of mine. This guy, a good friend of mine who knows I'm not straight, was saying "that's so gay" in class. My teacher proceeded to say "How would you like it if everytime there was something I didn't like, I said 'that's so *insert name*'" She then went on to say that there could well be gay people in the class (which there was) and gave him a huge lecture..during which I was giggling to myself...
I later came out to my teacher privately, and we discussed it, and some of the stuff that's happened to me because of it etc... and it was really great, honestly. I am really grateful for her reaction and the fact that I could talk about it so freely with her.

i definately feel they should teach others about the happenings and goings on of the "gay world" as if they're brought up with the concept i think there'd be less hatred - not saying that everyone WILL be more accepting...but the pricks who feel we are outsiders can gladly answer to me lol...
when i was at school - all my friends were very open, understanding etc. but i understand that it's not the case everywhere so I think somewhere there should be something in schools where gay rights etc. are explained in full...

Good luck convincing homophobic parents of this! The main reason that gay instruction hasn't been used yet in schools is homophobia from the PTA. However the greatest arguments against this are closely tied into the debate as to weather being gay is a choice/lifestyle or a genetic condition, no more of a choice than the color of your skin. One argument is that sex education rarely talks about feelings, so helping youth out with their questions of love aren't even allotted to straight kids. The only addition they should probably add is std protection for lesbians, since most protection methods for gay men are the same as straight couples.
Other than that however, the argument tied to orientation 'lifestyle' is basically thus: heterosexual sex is the more 'known' form of sex, thus it makes sense to teach protection about it. But if being gay is a choice; by teaching about it, the teachers are encouraging a 'defiant' lifestyle. I'm not saying that being gay is a choice, but until decisive proof is found that it isn't, that is their argument, and we can't just say "well thats not fair!". Opinions don't change the world, actions and science do. I will never be satisfied, but I may be satiated.
