They stayed in the shanty for about another half hour until Joey’s friend noticed a bus.
“Hey, kid,” he whispered, “There’s a bus.”
Joey lifted up his head and his friend stood up and picked up Joey’s bag. Joey stood up and walked beside the stranger.
“Oh, by the way, my name’s Jacob,” the stranger said, taking off his hood.
“Joey,” Joey said, glancing up at Jacob.
The bus drove up in front of them and screeched to a halt. The doors opened and the two boys went in. Jacob paid the bus driver for both of them and they took a seat toward the back. Jacob put Joey’s bag on the floor in front of them and they sat down. Joey rested his head on Jacob’s shoulder and the bus moved forward. Joey was finally free.
He fell asleep quickly on Jacob’s shoulder, not really noticing the other passengers on the bus. Jacob looked down at him and smiled. Poor kid. You’ve really had a rough night, haven’t you? he thought. He looked out the window at the passing scenery. They were quickly transported into a city. The bus made several stops and sped on after each passenger got out. Jacob saw his stop and decided to wake Joey.
“Hey. Hey, Joey,” he whispered, gently shaking the boy, “This is our stop. Wake up.”
Joey stirred and his eyes fluttered open. He sat up and rubbed them and took his bag. He and Jacob stood up after the bus stopped and walked out onto the sidewalk. This was the first time Joey was this far away from the ranch where he used to live and he was a little intimidated by the new scenery. He stayed close to Jacob and followed him to a lonely, but quaint street, which was far more inviting than the isolated road they were on previously.
Jacob led Joey to an apartment complex that loomed over the narrow road. He led him to the door standing in front of a staircase and opened it. He then walked across a hallway and stopped by a door, took out his keys, unlocked the door, and opened it. The light was off in Jacob’s apartment and it was dark. Jacob turned on the light and invited Joey in. Joey went in and was led to a bedroom.
“I use this room for guests sometimes,” Jacob said, turning on a light, “But since you’ll probably be staying with me a while, I guess this should be your room.”
“Thank you so much,” Joey said, “If there’s anything—”
“Oh, no, it’s nothing, Joey,” Jacob said, “By the way, that line is really corny. I‘m going to go take a shower. I‘ll show you to the bathroom when I finish.”
Joey smiled as Jacob left him in the room. He unpacked the few things he brought with him and set them on the bed. They included an extra change of clothes, the money he took from his keeper’s wallet, some other stuff, and his childhood gift from his parents before he was kidnapped and they were killed. He sighed and smiled, surprising himself for a moment.
“I forgot how good my life was before I got captured,” he mumbled to himself.
He looked around the room. It’s bright yellow color reminded him of his strong interest in the Gothic and Emo styles. He also remembered how much he hated the color on walls and clothes. The good memories, which had eluded him for the three years of his enslavement, finally flooded back into his mind. His favorite color was blue, he loved animals, he enjoyed food, he loved storms. He also remembered something else. He was bisexual.
He remembered covering it up, but under Jacob’s roof, he didn’t have to hide it anymore. He smiled at the thought. Jacob didn’t seem homophobic. Telling him might be easy. Joey thought. His thoughts swam in his head for a while until he was brought back to reality by a knock on the door.
