This site is too damn slow and not enough funds isn't too great of an excuse. You want visitors, you have them.. you're going to get more.. You might like to keep them. I left for a long period of time because of the poor loading time. I wont donate to a place that isn't meeting my expectations. :/ It's been a year since my joining.. Something should have happened. Show me results.

We offer this as a free service to YOU. How about you show a little more thanks and respect than badgering us on our own public forums.
We do the best we can with the resources we have. We don't require you to pay for your account like other similar sites do. We don't make you pay for a "premium account" so that you can access all parts of the website.
We allow FREE ACCESS to ALL AREAS of TheGYC....
You're welcome.
Wow, someone snapped. Hahahahaha! All in good humour = )

He has every right to "snap", he puts in countless hours of time he doesn't have into this site. And all the things he said are perfectly true. Dan Green

Yeah, I'm just real curious, is it the lack of money to maintain the servers themselves or the lack of funds to buy new servers that's of prime concern?
And maybe a .org transfer isn't that uncalled for, since as you all stated yourselves this is a non-profit site driven by donations. Perhaps a transfer to the .org domain would help with the donations?
P.S. There definitely has to be a cost-effective way to reduce lag, since if I can "septa-post" something then, again no offense to the moderation, the administration, and all their hard work. Something is in need dire need of fixing.
One possible way could be to move our forms to another board away from the site, perhaps phpbb. although that would amount to months of topics being erased; obviously does the end justify the means?

I suggest to remove the search function, it would relieve the servers greatly. That function isn't really so necessary, and the site loading speed has priority.<br /><br />Post edited by: irodino, at: 2007/09/02 10:46
The problem isn't load on servers. Well, it shouldn't be. Unless the GYC is being run on a 486, I can't see that being the problem. In all realism, a few Celeron 1.5's could handle the load on this site, because according to the hit counter over there >>>>>>>> there are never more than ~150 people, perhaps 200 on a good day, on this site at the one time. A few Dells from 2001 could easily handle that. I think the problem lies on the internet connection(s) this site is run from. It's just not fast enough! At peak times I regularly get my browser's timeout message, but I've given up at peak times (for me is late evening and early hours of the morning) because the more people that keep hitting refresh just means more server load which means catch 22.
If the problem is indeed load on servers, then something's not being done right.

Btw, if donating bandwidth and/or processing power is a possibility, count me in. I leave my computer on all the time and I'm about to install the folding@home client. Why not have it's bandwidth and processing power utilised when I'm in my sleepy sleep? I'd happily do that.
