So I was listening to CBC Radio today ... yea I know, I'm a geek ... anyway, I was listening to an on-air discussion about people's opinions on euthanasia (that's assisted suicide if you don't already know). Umm, now I'm not suicidal or anything, I'm just purely curious about what everyone's opinions with this are. I personally feel that it SHOULD be allowed (moral) but should not be let see.. how to put this.. totally government-controlled.
SO what's your opinion(s) on euthanasia?!??!?!!?

My opinion is that, on a completely moral and theoretical basis, there should be no question about euthanasia being perfectly acceptable. We should be able to be fully in control of our lives, especially when in agonising pain or beyond a quality of life that we may have once had.
However, while on a theoretical level I believe it is acceptable, the practicalities of creating a suitable system make the issue a lot more complicated. I have no idea about how a system would work, but as with any system, there would be room for human error and corruption and with so much at stake, the real question is whether or not it's worth the risk. Currently, I am in no position to found an opinion on that issue as I do not know how a euthanasia system would be governed in our country.

I support the idea of Euthenasia. There indeed are people alive who really don't want to be, and it isn't going to go away.
Interestingly enough, both my parents have said in passing, 'if I/we ever get that bad, be a good lad and slip something in our food, okay?', half jokingly, half serious. They don't want to end up like that, dependent on others for such basic and often 'personal' functions.
On a purely intellectual level I can support the idea, however personally, I don't know if I could slip anything, no matter how harmless, into my parent's food to kill them, no matter how much they wanted to.
That being said, that certainly doesn't mean others won't be able to go through with such a decision, everyone is different, and should be given more thought than, 'Nobody can kill their own parents, impossible, case closed.' In my case, I'd probably need a third party participant. What a fun job that would be for him  You should always respect one's religious beliefs, however imaginary friends, delusional behaviour, a belief in a two thousand year old folk-lore should be treated by a professional.

I support euthenasia, but under the guidance of certified doctors and with the approval of multiple psychologists.
If we where to implement such a practice (and it's really only a matter of time before we do) I think there needs to be a rather rigorous set of guidelines and qualifications one must go through before actually being killed. A number of unassociated psychologists/psychiatrists should be involved to assess the individual's mental health and their ability to understand and think clearly about their decision. A period of waiting should likely be implemented as well, say, a week, in order to insure that it is not simply a hasty decision that might be regretted later (should the individual have survived of course, haha).
On a personal level, I'm still all for it. I could probably take responsibility for the lives of anyone crazy enough to trust me with them, so long as they don't break any laws, lol. "Where we have strong emotions, we're liable to fool ourselves." - Carl Sagan

I concur with MooYak's post, though I'd say two to three weeks of therapy with the patient should be given and at least four doctors would have to agree that the patient was incurably ill.
