Fact or Fetish?

I was talking to some friends the other day, and one of them asked if another would date me. The one asked replied, "Sorry, I don't have an asian fetish."
It felt kind of offensive, seeing as "liking me" does not equal "having an asian fetish."
A fetish is an extreme sexual obsession with something that is not views as sexual, and without it you cannot be gratified.
It almost felt as though "liking asians" was an abnormal thing, somewhere between S&M and bondage. 
And the terms "rice queens," "potato queens," and "sticky rice" don't really help either.
Who else thinks the word fetish is being misused?
And when was the last time one of your traits or characteristics was wrongly labeled as a fetish?

Many people still have issues with race, so I reckon that's where the issue is coming from.
Personally I don't have an issue, however can't be sure if I'd have an inter-racial relationship, it depends on who I like I guess.
