I make up 'intentions' and hold them in my head, and sometimes external reality follows suit. If that's what you mean by spells, then yes, the ones you write yourself will be more potent because more energy goes into them.
Or maybe it's all a hoax.

No, i mean actual spells (rituals, spoken word, combining power of the elements with phases of the moon.) basically the kind you see in spellbooks, but made up by you from prior knowledge. well for me personaly, I haven't tried many rituals, spells, such but well for making up my own spells and stuff, I can't lol I know some spells can rhyme and stuff but I couldn't make up a decent rhyme if my life depended on it but the spells and potions that others have come up with have somewhat worked for me. Being Forgotten is worse then death

I may be new... but my understanding is that the intent and belief is more important than the ritual.. the ritual exists more to set your mind upon the path to release the energy. No those pants don't make your butt look big. It doesn't need any help looking big.

Oh yes, all the time. My favorite is the rain dance, whenever it is too dry out here I always fling off my clothes and go dancing in my backyard! It works every time.

I'm not wiccan, nor do I buy into magick as it is terribly reminiscent of prayer... and often about as useful. But since that's not what your asking, I will reply with what I learned during my time delving into some of the neo-pagan religions.
Spells do not need to be a set phrase or ritual. In fact, the most potent spells are supposed to be those created by yourself, as they hold the pure intent and are customized entirely by you for you using what is precious to you. If however you wish to use someone else's ritual or words, be sure you know exactly what the outcome is to be. It follows the same concepts when using a "charged" object, as it should only be done when the person who charged it or created the spell is someone that you have an immense amount of trust in. In other words... don't go about asking people on a forum for spells.
There. You might even be fooled that I believe the rubbish. But anyway, that is some of what I was taught, take it or leave it. If you want my advice though, you would be better off learning about reality and how to make "magick" with your personality, speech, bearing, etc... but each to his own.
