Anyway, here's my top 5 (in no order).
'Oceans Rise' by Borknagar - Epic atmospheric folk/black metal. Vaguely similar to Dimmu Borgir, except the songwriting is far superior, more varied, and basically it's a lot less boring to listen to. Simen's vocals (both clean and screams) are some of the best in the genre, surpassed only by Vintersorg on Borknagar's newer albums, and the musicianship is breathtaking.
'Lemuria' by Therion - I could have chosen any song from Lemuria/Sirius B to be honest. No other band on the planet integrate metal with orchestral arrangements and operatic vocals quite as flawlessly as Therion.
'Undead Stillborn' by Legion Of The Damned - Modern thrash at it's very best. Thunderous riffs of varying speed, a highly addictive groove, brutal clockwork-tight drumming, solid songwriting, and harsh raspy vocals that fit the mood perfectly. WARNING - May cause whiplash!
'All Of The Same Blood' by Kreator - What can I say? A thrash masterpiece. Depth, precision, aggression, melody... this has it all. And Kreator are THE best live band on the planet.
'D.N.R. (Do Not Resuscitate)' by Testament - Yup, more thrash (it's been the dominant subgenre on my playlist recently), except you can forget whatever I wrote about the other two, because this is probably my favourite thrash song of all time. This one smokes!
