In my skool, the topic isn't discussed explicitly in any classes BUT the teachers tend to be very supportive...

the students use the term as synonymous to stupid, but if you out yourself to them, MOST wont' harass u... they'll just go like"... oh... ummm... *awkward silence*... *attempts to change topic*"

but actually, there is a section in my psychology textbook that talks about homosexxuality sooooo... its possible that later in the year, there'll be some discussion on it...

I know it was never taught when I was still at school... but that was because it was prevented by Section 28 of the Local Government Act 1988 (c9) until 2003.

"Prohibition on promoting homosexuality by teaching or by publishing material.
A local authority shall not -
a. intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality;
b. promote the teaching in any maintained [at the public expense] school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship."

That doesn't exist anymore, but there is nothing (that I'm aware of, at least) that says it has to be included as part of the curriculum (just that discrimination should not be tolerated). Because it doesn't HAVE to be taught, schools haven't bothered to change what they teach very much over the past few years, so it probably won't come up all that often in UK schools.

p.s. I see you're from Sheffield Harrison. I'm at uni there at the mo.

In my school we have a gay&straight alliance club but its the mostboring thing ever and not alot of people even know it exists in my school.i do get picked on but only from my friends as a joke and i do the same, i guess i look a little intimidating(well if you saw a new pic of me) so i think that might be why...besides a few other people(the retarded annoying homophobes at my school) who dont even bother cause they know they would get dised and burned till the cows got home...besides one kid who likes hitting me with eggs and other vegetables...so i told his parents that id sue him for a hate crime and that was 2 weeks ago...we still dis each other(well he tries) but atleast he doesnt do anything physical anymore.

the point of the story is...fight back in anyway possible, be confident, dont sit back and take it like a plant.

the number one insult mostly used is fag and faggot.
if people call you that dont get mad or upset, because a fag is a cigarette bud and a faggot is a bundle of sticks.so tell them that and that its pointless to use those words.or they call you queer or homo, all their doing is pointing out the obvious so its not an insult at all...

I'm lucky enough to go to a really left wing school, where I can be openly gay without being hassled. We recently had our year 11 sex ed camp, adn not only was there homosexual safe sex, but also a whole unit about homophobia. i'm lucky i go to such an open minded school.
my old school, however, which was an all girls school, was not as good. lol but i think taht school was just in denial about sex as a whole, as i do not rememebr condoms ever being emntioned until year 9 or 10.

I go to a half/half kind of school; where the idiots are homophobic and us smart people aren't. I haven't come out to the school yet, but I've hinted at discussing homophobia in English class before. Luckily, most of our teachers have personal connections with students in classes, where we can express our opinions and they can theirs. None of the teachers are homophobic, in fact, most will say "don't use the word in that context" or "don't be homophobic" if a student makes a "that's gay" or homophobic remark.

In sex ed classes it gets mentioned occasionally, though not a lot. It was interesting though, there was one activity we did where the teacher said a statement and we went to different ends of the room depending on whether we agreed or not. Anyway, one question was 'would you support a friend if they told you they were gay' and most people said yes. I thought most of the people in the room were homophobic, so...they were either lying, or I was wrong

Well I go to an all girls school, doing my 5th year there which will be my last year there before I go to college. Not once have we been taught about anything to do with homophobia etc.
Being and all girls school the typical topics of conversation are boys, boys and boys, so coming out for me especially in that environment was very hard, especially when there were like two girls who had actually come out for being bisexual, and were basically the down point for everyone at the school. I found it was generally the plastic type girls that would actually rip it out of them.
However when I did come out, everyone was really suportive and I could deffinatly tell who my real friends were. Even now I get the odd look off someone as school, or hear that someone has been bitching or calling me 'disgusting' because of my sexuality. The normal comment I get would have to be 'dirty lesbian', but all my mates who all happen to be straight all stick up for me.
The teachers do fuck all. They are all pretty up there own arse's anyways, so I have never really approached any of them about it. However if I did, i don't think they would actually take it seriously.

You see, this is what I think the main problem with the education system is. Students are tricked into thinking they're subordinate. You're not. You're the very reason for the school's existence, and as such the school has a moral duty to you. If you go to a pulic (US "Private") school, then parents could always threaten not to pay or to sue (because they can afford to). If in a state school (US "pulbic"), then I'd investigate the complaints proceedures and take it to a higher authority.

Yeah, you know it's interesting, a lot of people would assume that if somebody says "that's gay" or "faggot", they're automatically homophobic... but this isn't always the case. Sometimes people genuinely say "gay" in a negative context subconsciously. It's like when atheists say "oh my God!", "holy Hell!" or "Jesus!"

My school has nothing in any curriculum about homosexuality but it's not uncommon for the topic to brought up in class, even though it doesn't fit with any curriculum at all. Last year in bio I remember we got into a discussion about the "gay gene". And my english teacher would talk about homosexuals being perfectly equal to heterosexuals and how stupid it is for someone to care so much if someone's gay or straight. My english teacher this year brought up Matthew Shephard.

But in my opinion we need to include something about homophobia, homosexuality, or the gay rights movement in classes.

When I was at High School (UK) (age11-16) I don't think I had any sex education relating to homosexuality. And while I can see the advantage of equality being expressed in the classroom by equal representation in the curriculum, I would prefer it not to be taught because:

1. It is unfair to teach an entire class about sexual practice which will only affect a small fraction, possibly even one individual in the class. If a class is not learning something relevant it gets bored, and then the jokes begin to fly.

2. I still cringe when I think of my sex education classes, when push comes to shove sex education can be expressed as: 1. Always wear a condom, 2. Monogamy is generally preferable. 3.STIs are bad, this is what they look like [disgusting pictures], if you get them, see a doctor. Since these essential elements apply to any sexuality, I don't think homosexuality based moduli for the national curriculum are needed.

I would also point out that since the Local Government Act 2003 (the repealing of section 28) there has been no significant change to the national curriculum, and no planned change in regard to sex education.

In regards to homophobia, while my sixth form is very liberal - with homophobia being utterly socially unacceptable - it does still exist, my only advice is confidence, and failing that complain to powers that be, if that fails keep complaining up the ladder until you hit someone sympathetic.

Readers in the UK may also find this interesting.
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, only naughtier.

I don't think my school teaches anything about homosexuality at all. Some of the teachers are kind of supportive about it and mainly the youth workers and mentors but they are open minded people after all. I find it a shame really that it isn't taught in my school or all schools. It can make some people isolated in their own group or individually on their own plus lack others understanding what homosexuality is, what it feels like and how it is portrayed NOW in this world.
