that hurts me to read: i once read a book on homophobia and it talked about the nasty, awful things that people who were openly gay had endure. They were to be 'corrected' by getting sent to certain camps or having to go to certain religious meetings etc and i felt sickened by it. my family know nothing of my bicuriosity and they never will. my mum would be funny about it but cool, the rest of the pack would disown me or accuse my mum of 'turning' me like this by not putting me in a church school or sending me to church. it makes me wanna be

Reform camps and religious repetition, all but methods to brainwash a person into believing that they are wrong, and their lifestyles hold no form of validity. I think it's wrong. People should always follow their hearts and what they truly believe in.

What alot of people fail to grasp is that homosexuality is not something that can be "cured" my parents had me prayed over trying to have the "spirit" cast out but that obviously didnt work. but i think its ridiculous how some people think that by torturing they can turn someone straight i've heard stories of reformitories in mexico and im so glad that while my parents are conservative pentecostal nuts, they're not that crazy.

when I came out to my mother I thought that she was okay with it, even though she wasn't thrilled with the idea of having a queer daughter, but when my girlfriend came out to her parents they freaking flipped. They sent her away and made her go to this all christian school, and tried to cure her, like it was some sort of flesh-eating virus.
We still kept in contact through her brother, who understood, but a few weeks ago, I stopped getting letters. She was my first love and she killed herself. She took her own life after a visit with her parents. She told them that she wouldn't change, that she couldn't, and that she loved me, a girl. Her dad beat the shit out of her, and then said that she could work as a whore on the street because he wouldn't support some "god-forsaken dyke"
She was raised learning that family was everything, so she killed herself because she meant nothing to her family.
Recently my mother has been getting religious and introduced me to an "ex-homosexual" who basically told me i would burn in hell if i didn't change my ways like he had. And do you want to know what my Mother said. she said
"See honey, there is still hope for you, you don't have to end up like that girl. It is for your own good, I just want you to be happy and healthy in the eyes of the Lord."
I about killed my mother.
And I still think I might.

Sexuality is not something you can cure, it isn't an illness, and I hate when parents are like that.

im wondering how other people feel about parents trying to "correct" a childs sexuality. Either by sending them to a residential placement(like my parents did) or by any other sick and twisted way that they can think of. If you were sent to a facility, you can share your story here and get some advice on how to cope with the problems it caused you.(if it caused any) or you can give others advice who have been in your situation.

coming from a country like Cyprus, where being gay is not just frowned upon, but you are considered as a curse to the family, a disgrace to the people who ever knew you and a mental psycho in need of treatment, i can share some knowledge.
A friend of mine, one of the few ones in Cyprus who has the balls to join the Gay Community, now 25, told me this some months ago as we were talking.
He comes from a little town in the suburbs of Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus. He realized he was gay at the age of 14, although he was not flamboyant and you would have never guessed he was gay.

He came out to his friends at the age of 16, and the word was spread around enough that his folks found out. Their actions were the following:

1. Tried to talk him out and convince him that he is not gay, and he cannot be gay since he had girlfriends before

2. Tried to blame it on the fact that he had a pound or two more weight (really, not even overweight, just had some fat), and took him to a dietitian, so that he can lose weight and be interested in girls. The result was that he lost weight but -of course - did not change his mind.

3. They took him to a psychiatrist, not even a psychologist, because they believed that with proper medication and some medical care, he would turn straight!!!

4. When nothing worked, and saw that he was gay and as gay as one can be, they decided to take him to church, and instead, they called the priest to come to his house and perform exorcism on him as if he had been possessed by some kind of demons!!!

After all that, they had to accept his sexuality, in the end. Only thing is... he accepted to undergo everything coz he was enjoying all the procedure.

I think thats amazing, how they would go to such lengths to 'cure' their son of his homosexuality.
I've seen a few TV shows about gay guys actually going to correctional places like that, because they don't want to be gay. It was just digusting.
I've never been really big on family, and my sister didn't really care at all when I told her.
My mum told me to wait so I could make sure, and I did for about a year, and then when I told my dad, he told me to do the same thing.
Most parents just don't understand what you're going through, because unless one or both of your parents are gay and lesbian, they're not going to be familiar with those feelings.
But even if your family isn't accepting of it, there is an extremely supportive gay community waiting for you with open arms, and thats a nice feeling to have.

i think its a bit sick really if they have such a problem with it and expect you to change why dont they be supportive and be gay or bisexual or whatever... im not saying thats right either but maybe suggesting u changing is absurd as them changing maybe that might help to see how ridiculous it is. You are only a heterosexual not terminaly ill....

my mum said she accepted it but there are times i notice when the conversation takes a "turn" and suddenly is cut off short and she makes comments like when i was buying stuff to do my nails she asked if i liked guys now i was like its not what u buy..... and she asked bcoz i was gay did i want to be a guy and i mean she just assumes thats stereotyped lesbians are basically boys with different bits

but i like doing my nails and shopping but i like girls as well cant u have both? but in general my family have accepted it pretty well and i had read a load of stories of how coming out was bad as u could be beaten and disowned and i was so scared so when my mum guessed i was quite relieved so i feel sorry for all u guys who have a bad time coming out just remember whatever your going through at least ur honest and a better person 4 it

my mum checked what i have been doing on internet and she found gyc (and some other stuff...) she just came to me and asked me if im gay, and she told me that she dont care if im straight or gay, im her son and she loves me anyway. i told her im not gay, but its nice to know that she accepts it, im not ready to talk about it with her yet, but i dont think that would be so hard if i decides to tell her. i havent seen my dad in almost a year, he is not a important part of my life and i dont think he would like to know im gay...

My mom did the same thing to me (looking on my computer) and instead of saying i love you the way you are she just said that i was going through a phase and that i could really consider liking girls and stuff and that i should go to the school counsellor and see if we could fix it! before that i was totally fine with me mom but since then i havn't really gotten along with her. i said that i went and talked to the counsellor (of course i didn't im perfectly fine with me being gay...) and that everything was fine and now i dont want to even tell her because i know that she will look at me differently and wont respect me as much.... well that was my little rant....

This is sick. It's sick, and it's wrong, and it should be illegal as hell!!

I once heard a story where a parent actually hired some people to kidnap her son, and basically beat the hell out of him until he became straight.

YOU CAN'T BEAT PEOPLE STRAIGHT, THAT'S NOT HOW IT WORKS.

It's stuff like this that makes me want to punch stupid people in the face....

No, it isnt. But unfortunately, many homophobes portray it as that.
Homophobia = Insecurity about being heterosexual.

My view on this is that beating and suchlike may add to homosexual tendencies. A hella lot of people I know who are gay, have, like me, had a pretty shitty past life. I am not saying I was beaten to a pulp, but for a few years I was abused, both mentally and at times physically.

I believe we are all born without a sexuality, as such. I think it is a decision that we later make, partly under our control, partly not. I believe this happens at puberty, and it is something we are destined for. I also believe there are more straight people who are just "in the closet gays" than we may at first realise. Just my two pence

There's all sorts of sick stories. I think it's disgusting that some people actually believe that their hate does good.

Even in the name of religion... I'm sorry, but I honestly can't see those people being seen favorably in the eyes of whatever God they pretend to obey. Not my place to judge, but still.

crikey!!!!

Whilst i cant agree with what your parents did to you, i think you have to try and empathise with them. They're trying to do what's best for you. I mean, my mum, when i came out to her, was like "i dont have a problem with it but i just want you to be happy."

Many parents, my mother included, think young gay people are unhappy. Ye, i feel a bit lonely sometimes but im not unhappy!!!!!!!!

Perhaps you should ask your parents why they did that; then you might be better equipped to understand them.

Chin up!

My father is insanly homophobic and when I said that I was having confusion as a way to prepare him, he looked me right in the eye and said "if you turn out gay, you're going to military school because I will not have a queer son.". It was like he kicked me in the gut as hard as he could and didn't feel bad . Ironicly, i told my mom the same thing I told him and she said that if I'm gay it's fine and she will be there for me along with my sister and her side of the family. My dads side couldn't handdle the truth or they would kill me. They would litteraly kill me if they found out .
