Threads like this nearly always veer off topic, because it turns into a knowledge war. All the "I have six degrees behind my glasses" people who pray on knowledge and "being cleverer than the next man" have nothing better to do but try and prove themselves the alpha male in knowledge.

Its pathetic; and it shows the bare bones of the human dominative {dog-eat-dog} nature.

I sit back and watch while people flame each other; usually both parties are wrong, or somewhat biased in disguise. =]

'tis funny.

I agree. C'mon people - stop using "knowledge" to win an argument. It's unfair. I mean, you can prove anything with facts, can't you?

Exactly. Its good to hear an echo.

Those who use knowledge in this way are to me the weakest of people. Like you said; knowledge can prove anything, and it goes to show that people who hide behind it must be insecure and afraid of being second best.

Its the lowest of low.

At least I am not afraid to admit I don't know every president of America, I don't know everything about computer mainframes, I don't know anything about politics, so yea, thats why I am SIXTEEN, not SIXTY.

Yay, lets all become politicians.

The father of the girl who delivers papers to the cousin of the employer of the neighbour of scientist X's dentist once worked as a petrol station attendant. Therefore, the credibility of scientist X is questionable, and his 'evidence' showing human influence on global warming is minimal should be disregarded.

A bullet proof argument, with no scientific facts necessary.

So, I was one step ahead.

To get to the top? Of what exactly?

Could it just be that actually using knowledge and facts tends to be a bit of a requirement in a debate? (This is the "Big Debates" forum, after all - as a moderator, I'd assumed you'd know this).

To come into a debating forum and get at people for debating is laughable and ignorant.

Quite frankly, it stinks of someone not being able to keep up with the argument. Maybe if you cared to have of this knowledge of which you speak, you'd get a lot more enjoyment from some of the things on the forums.

I don't pretend to know everything, no one in here has done. They just profess to know something - sometimes wrongly, sometimes rightly. But even when wrong, I have far more respect for them than I do for someone who is terrified of something they don't understand.

There are many things I don't know - an infinite amount of things, in fact - but rather than cry about how people with that knowledge are pathetic, I look to see what I can learn, and to find out just that little bit more about the world.

So next time you see something on here you don't understand, I suggest you either look to see what you can understand and learn from it or be content in your ignorance and move on. Don't fling mud at those who choose to know just because you don't.
I'll tell you what Jesus would NOT do - Jesus would not wreck a guy's party.

hahaha wow.... umm ok I was going to go on my big rant about Global warming... but after reading 4 LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG pages about global warming... I see that everyone has touched all the area's I was going to talk about lol, and I like the debate that is taking place here to...

But anyways I have a quick lil wee question here. Why are you even asking yourself is it's global warming or not? The planet is heating up, the Co2 Emissions are crazy.... lets say it's not global warming right now ok.. let's say it's natural... ok the planet is warming up naturaly ok fine w/e good for it, but uhhh.. wait if it's already warming up on it's own should we be helping it along? That seems like a no, no to me.

Anywho even if it's not global warming the Co2 Emissions are still... I dont even know what to say about them, looking over graphes, scales, records etc, how can you say it's not global warming when the proof is right there, when I see a graph that is usually low (shouldn't get higher) and just in the past 10-20 years has spiked.... that scares the crap out of me.

But point being even if the planet is warming up naturally we should still be concerned about the recent spike in Co2 Emissions.. even if it is natural we should still work on lowering the levels. I dont see any good comming from having these Co2 emissions being so high, but I laugh at the people who are sitting back and not worring about it like huh???

So why debate wether or not it's natural or not? No matter if it is or not we should be focused on lowering those emissions, some people are saying it could/would ruin the worlds economy... uhhh... umm ok but when the plaent is beyond saving and it wont hold up anymore what good is the worlds economy? Same wwith these huge companys that wont do anything about lowering there emissions... wtf? Money will be no good when our planet is no good. I dont know some people I just stand there and wonder.

But it's 5:31 a.m. and I have a 20 hour trip I must make... so I'm off to Toronto for a week to visit the bf and attend a few conferences YAY! *rolls eyes* lol anywho toodles

Well, about that Mars warming up thing: it would be very convenient to say that because Mars is warming up too, then global warming on Earth must not be true. But that isn't science, that's just an observation. To really understand what's going on in Mars and on Earth is to figure out Why they are warming up. Things don't heat up for no reason, and dumping a lot of CO2 in the air WILL do something, it's not going to just sit there and look cute (even though you can't see it). Maybe if all the greenhouse gases were colored you could actually see that they ARE there. In my own opinion, the kind of people that criticize and doubt global warming would be the same people who would think the world is flat and at the center of the universe, that electricty was evil, and that wheel had absoluetly no functional purpose.

The global warming is a fact... How else would life exist, without it no life would live cause it'd be so cold... Beyond that I doubt global warming has much more "crisis" to offer... Yes, life is a crisis

In my humble opinion, global warming is clearly a problem, one that we have caused, one that we can solve, but it's not the problem everyone thinks it is, or Al Gore would have you believe it is.
Global Warming is a natural cycle of climate change, and nothing new, but the rate at which it is occurring is unnatural, and quite damaging to our environment if allowed to continue.

I think the assumption that in fifty years, the Earth is going to be something equivalent to Hell's waiting room is pretty much an uneducated crap-shoot-in-the-dark...the average temperature of the Earth has risen 1.3° Fahrenheit in the last hundred hears...one-and-a-third degrees!!! It's going to be a while before we break our thermometers, people...you can calm down.

Now, as far as scientists agreeing or disagreeing with the theory, only one group of scientific figure officially rejects the proposal, and that would be none other than *drum roll* the American Society of Petroleum Geologists....

There have already been measures made to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases, the Kyoto Protocol. Naturally, hough, the US never ratified the treaty, and, accordingly, we have only increased our production of greenhouse gases since.

I have some very interesting ideas on this topic, but I'm sufering a mental block right now, so I'll catch up later...I'll close with a nice cartoon:

They say if global warming continues Britain is going to end up with a climate like southern spain - BRING IT ON ,

On a more serious not you can prove anything with statistics (as Disraeli said "Lies, Damn lies and Statistics) and since the oldest measurements of temparature are MetOffice recordings and since it's only 200 years old there's a few billion years missing in order for us to make a proper clear judgement.
If Humans are truly to blame for the current change of one whole degree over 200 years and the problem is going to get worse if we don't do anything I can guarantee that politicians are not going to find the solution, there solution will only be to raise taxes to save the planet and who fly around the world in order to lecture us on the evils flight. Nor will it be solved by Guardian reading socks and sandal wearing muesli eating ex-communists who want to depress everyone else as much as they themselves are.
No the solution will come from some Geniuses who manage to make hydrogen engines and nuclear fusion reactors feasible, who will then be entirely forgotten and the politicians will take all the credit.

There are many things that make me question the whole Global warming agenda. Mainly Western European countries that seem to want to enforce their views of 'environmentally safe' production on the rest of the, usually much poorer, planet. A mass media that's always feed us shit with a shovel has found a great spin from the usual crappy weather reporting, it's giving them a whole lot to go into a sensationalistic orgasm, and climatologists are finally bringing in the big cash.

I will say this, I think Global Warming itself has been proven, I don't think it's something that's difficult to do. Simply look at average temperatures across the world and see if they're going up. The debate comes about when you postulate that humans are the cause. I can see the attempted logic behind this, yet I've heard arguments invalidating this theory that I've not heard answered yet.

Like -

Measurements of CO2 levels compared to temperatures show that they've both gone up, however it's shown that temperatures went up first, from memory I think a couple of years or something before CO2 levels started to rise. The argument for this, which goes against the popular Global Warming theory is that the oceans contain vastly more CO2 than we could ever hope to produce, and when the water warms, on average more CO2 is let out, raising the CO2 levels of the atmosphere.

It seems to me that we blame ourselves because we are of course the centre of our universe (not literally ), yet if you compare the level of energy the sun releases compared to what we release, there is absolutely no comparison. I believe the cause is natural. I don't think our industries should continue on their way for ever, but for a more pragmatic reason of running out of fossil fuels and forests. I think they shouldn't be rushed to change if it's going to cause economic loss, but I think things can change.

Agh, politics, is the spineless backbone of all living things If change comes about, it will be at a time when an election is coming up.
You should always respect one's religious beliefs, however imaginary friends, delusional behaviour, a belief in a two thousand year old folk-lore should be treated by a professional.

I've noticed a quite a few people who have been trying to deny Global Warming, that Earth's climate is rising on it's own, with little or no role from mankind. Although the Earth's climate is very likely to rise even if we cut down on CO2 emissions, and live a "Green" lifestyle, CO2 emissions and the developed world's life style plays a major role in it. Here's an analogy:

All organisms on Earth die, this is a proven fact. Now, although a organism will die and their is little that can be done to help, there are a lot of factors that are involved in death (disease, murder, etc.). However, through medicine and living a healthy lifestyle, one can have a longer life, essentially prolonging death. The same applies to Global Warming.

If mankind can develop a better recyling method (unfortunately paper recyling uses even more energy then it presumabally saves), cut back on CO2 emissions, and live a "Green" lifestyle, we can prevent Global Warming from occuring at such a rapid rate.

I think the whole "Lifeboat Britain" thing is a little scary. For those who have not heard of it's about Global warming, and how people think it will increase the temperatures around the equator. Causing many farmers to grow different types of grain in drier conditions, and will yield less product. The thought is that the British have already researched this, and have stock piled on nuclear supplies and submarines. Countries like Canada (I’m from Canada =]), Russia and Britain will benefit, as there will be more land suitable to farming that is to cold/covered in snow right now. According to Gwynne Dyer, it is the fact that places that are industrialized, with weapons like Italy, and the United States because they are suffering (they will be affected by drought) will try and get more food from the benefiting countries but there will not be enough. So war will occur. I LOVE all the people I have meet here, I don’t want anyone to go to war. Everyone will just have to migrate 50Km North/South, depending on which half of the earth you live on. Gwynne however thinks that it is possible to help the world, when I talked to him (Yeah!!! I actually got to talk him!!!!) He told me that an increase in the pollution is from 3rd world countries burning coal for power. (Not that we have/are not doing it, it’s that they weren’t doing it before) It is cheaper and countries like China are in so much construction they require the increase of power. He went on to say that the best way would be for the 1st world countries to ask the 3rd world countries to put as much money as went into the coal plant into a nuclear cleaner power plant, the rest of the funning would have to come from 1st world tax payers. So it is unlikely something like this will happen in till the planes are filled with a thick smoke, to create a fake atmosphere, to lessen the UV light coming through. (That seems like a gross idea, it has been proposed to blanket earth with a thick yellow smoke, which will be put there by planes) The problem with just “Clean energy” is that it is to unreliable, There are not always rivers, the wind is not always blowing, at night when we turn the lights there is no sun, and batteries can’t power the country in the night (yet)
