I think the war is immoral and wrong, and that's based on a personal conviction. On top of that, President Bush defied the United Nations to invade and occupy Iraq, which makes this an illegal war. And then he savaged international peacekeeping laws outlined in the Geneva Convention. He's a war criminal, to put it simply. He and Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld should be tried before the world court for crimes against humanity. And then thrown behind bars.

As for immigration, I think anyone should be allowed to live here. We are, after all, a country of immigrants. And in case anyone has forgotten, our ancestors were the original illegal immigrants--they ran the Native Americans off and took over this land. But no one ever mentions that when engaged in heated political repartee.

The reason for America's LARGE amount of people is, kinda disgustingly, religion. They came from areas where their religious beliefs weren't common, and went to the US to be "free"... Like the state Pennsylvania which is named after the founder of the Quakers I believe....

Today the United Nations passed a resolution on Darfur, approving 26,000 troops made up of a hybrid of African Union and some European troops (largely AU it looks like). More details here: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/africa/article2176270.ece

My first thought is Thank God. My second is About Effing Time.

Which brings me to a question: now that something is (finally) being done about the genocide in Darfur, what should matter more? That the United Nations accepted the resolution for deployment of the largest peacekeeping force in its history? Should it be patted on the back for this? Or should it be rebuked and shamed for not acting decisively for near five years and allowing a quarter of a million people (at least) to be slaughtered?

I think they should be applauded for sending the people there. Better late than never. Plus you get nowhere but down from negative things...

In inmigration issues i think the american policies are wrong. Latinos and mexicans are the pilars of the american economy, and yet they dare considering us a threat!!. The simple idea of spending millions of dollars in a frontier wall is insane and it is an insult to mexico and to south america. This happens in spain as well, they look at ecuadorians like the cheap laborers who don´t belong in the place and treat them like crap...even in the so called "democracy" discrimination has it´s place. Ohh yeah and i hate bush!!! lol.

Nice point. But I'm on the other side of this argument.

Illegal immigrants ARE helping the economy, but not themselves for the most part. The only people making money off of their hard work are the rich owners of some various companies and political groups, not the immigrants themselves. They're stuck in poverty wherever they go, because they have no education, can't speak English (a lot of the illegal immigrants probably want to speak English, but it must be hard for them learning a new language in such a hostile place).

It's a real sad situation.

Indeed i totally agree with u, the laboral conditions offered to illegal inmigransts are horrible, with extremely low salaries and exploitation. But the government is sometimes not doing them a a favor when deporting them to their countries of origin, where the salaries are even lower or jobs are insufficient to cover all the demand of the laboral market; and u also have to consider that most of the people whe emigrate are very likely to have a high number of kids due to poor levels of education which are the reason of them not being able to obtain a well paid job. I think emigrating from one´s country is not the solution, specially cause it shatters the core of families, but in return, a higher standard of living for the kids seems like reason enough to venture in a foreign country, even if this means degradation and infrahuman treatment from the receiving country. The hiring of illegals does give extra income to the hiring part, but that doesnt matter to illegals who are even willing to jeopardize their own live in the search of the "american dream"...

APEC is wrong. They should just go into the Kyoto agreement better. What APEC are trying to do will cause more damage than good.

On the US elections, I am probably going to be the loner here but i say go Mitt Romney. I could not take another Clinton presidency. I'm odd because I am extremely conservative except on one issue, gay rights.

I'm with you. I don't think that there is one good reason to be against gay marriage. I'm rooting for Romney.

The Kyoto protocol that no one is following? Or the one that even if it was followed, wouldn't stop global warming? Or the one that China didn't sign, even though they will soon be the foremost cause of "global warming"?

Have you ever looked at the Geneva convention? According to its terms, Iraqi insurgents, are NOT protected by the Geneva code. They don't wear uniforms, they don't have an identifiable leader, and they themselves have violated the code. All three are prohibited under the Geneva convention, thus meaning, they don't qualify for Geneva protection. And, in order to try Bush for war crimes, you'd have to link him to said "tortures".

P.S. When would have been the right time to try Saddam for war crimes?

On the Iran issue,
The president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is considered to be a clown by most of the world . Most of the Middle East doesn't even take him seriously.
I've talked to an ex-Iraqi citizen and she even told me that he was a joke and acted more like a crazy, unrealistic, fanatic than a leader of a country.

He doesn't even wield that much power!

A few days late, but Benazir Bhutto is dead, assassinated on the 27th in Rawalpindi. What do you think would have happened had she not been killed? If elected do you think Musharaff would have relinquished control? Do you think the United States chose the wrong person to back in Pakistan by supporting Musharaff and not Bhutto?

I was very shocked and upset by her death, my hope for a democratic Pakistan basically died with her. If Al-Qaeda's claims of responsibility are true then this shows a major shift in their tactics from broad short-term attacks to specific long-term attacks such as political assassinations.

The assassination of Benazir Bhutto came as a big shock. The consequences were even a bigger shock. Why would someone feel compelled to destroy their own country in outrage of someones death, in which that person sought to help the country and establish democracy? Surely that's not what she would want her supporters to do?

It is a shame they assassinated her. They have done no favours for their country and in fact just worsened the situation.

For all we know the American government has been tormenting their people into imperialism, The attacks on 9-11, Don't you find it a little odd the Pentagon was hit, but no one their was killed? and World Trade Center #7 got destroyed because of a fire? When have other steel buildings been burned down? They could have presented the media with Bhutto, after there failure in Iraq, they want more oil and their "War on Terrorism" is getting a little old, show the American people an under-dog democratic figure in Pakistan, and then create a tragedy so you have a reason to bring in your army. Does anyone know for sure if they just haven't been planning attacks to make it look they are being the "Good Guys"? Bhutto was in control before, she took huge loans from Spain and did not pay them back, she sent the Taliban (who want more security then anything, which would cause them to be more aggressive) into Afghanistan. Her husband was called the 10% man, he got at least 10% of every deal he could get his hands on. She dose not seam all that they say she is on the news if you do a little reading.
But I don't know how much of that I really believe, just stating another side. It is in my head though, and I usually question things I see on the news.

Oh, come on, that's just stupid to start going down the whole 9/11 Conspiracy trail. It's all been done before. The next thing we'll be hearing was that the plane crash at Heathrow was orchestrated by BA so they could have 'Heroic Captains' at the helms of their planes, all part of a huge PR scam. Despite the fact that this defies the logic that the plane crash ruined the plane series' ten year unbroken safety record, and perhaps tarnished BA's image. I wouldn't be surprised if I was shouted down for pointing this out because 'the government is trying to control my mind.'

Pakistan is a nation where I find it difficult to side with anyone. There's Bhutto, who, tragically assasinated, was part of a dynasty, where PMs are chosen and elected on a system resembling the mediaeval english monarchy. Ex-general Mushrraf, on the other hand, stole power from a democratically elected President.

Either way, Pakistan is a nation in disarray, and that's something unlikely to be sorted soon - tbf, they have difficulty keeping the map lines still in the north.

It seems rather redundant to comment on some aspects of our occupation of Iraq so i will attempt to bring some new ideas and facts to the table. Obviously our motives for entering the nation were in no way to liberate a people suffering under a totalitarian government but rather to fulfill the bush administration's personal vendetta. In all seriousness the Weapons of Mass Destruction as false as they were, were apparently fabricated by Hussein himself in order to show a little muscle flex to the rest of the Arab world. However, this in no way is reason enough to invade a nation, but rather a stepping off point for speculation. If the United Nations was permitted to finish its weapons inspection they would have found that there were no long range missiles but only the weapons that the members of the United Nations (including the US) had provided Iraq with years before, in the hopes of gaining an edge in the stand off against Iran. Unfortunately, living in a nation that has a character of expediting things, we found ourselves in a war, of course with the help of an absent-minded congress and a belligerent and uninformed administration. Ironically despite the whole weapons of mass destruction situation, somehow people seemed to forget that Bush Sr. was the reigning president during our first Gulf War, in which he had pledged to rid the Iraqi nation of Saddam however only found himself capable of crushing the country's military forces in Kuwait. Now isn't it just plain uncanny that his son would seem to continue the same policy in his administration. Surprise, surprise, however we cannot blame the American people for failing to realize this for our nation was plagued with a fear of terrorism after 9/11. We were a angry, hurt, and vulnerable, who were susceptible to lies and extreme actions from our government. We allowed the government to go to extremes because they used the slogan of 9/11 to justify their actions. We believed in them for we had been a nation thrust into a world struggle in which he had been for so long separated. On a final note i cannot finish without of course giving credit to oil the source of modern life. Despite all the progressive reforms of the 1900s we still remained tied to the industries in our highest levels of government. Therefore, another cause for this war was oil, black crude oil. There is no hiding it, for as a nation, it is a fact that we are dependent on it, and for the nation to spend millions of taxpayers dollars and to send thousands of our own Americans to Iraq to put their lives on the line, oil is the only justification. Overall, the whole situation is a hot mess, in which there is no simple solution in sight.
