How accepting is your high school? 1 Year, 7 Months ago

How homophobic is your high school? Rate it on a scale from 1 to 10. 1 being Extremely Homophobic, 10 being Extremely Accepting. Then give a reason why.
I'll go first.
I give my school a rating of 2. Why? Because it's a small Catholic school and most of the students come from rich, conservative families. All their lives, they are preached to about the evils of homosexuality. I wonder if they can see my Satan horns sprouting out from beneath my hair.

7. The older students are really cool with gays, and around year nine and up are also perfectly cool with them. However, the year 7 still think it's dirty (because their young, that's forgivable) and the rougher students in all years tend to be the more homophobic. They're the ones from the poorer backgrounds with street credit and whatnot notching on their belts. Overall, most people are very accepting.
But the homophobes I hate are the catholic girls. This is just an observation of a small number of catholic girls and women at my school I know, not a blanket judgement on all catholics and all women, so you know. The catholic girls believe homosexuality is a sin. There are two of them on my course and sharing quite a few of my classes. When we debate the subject, they just say it's a sin against God, and I tell them I'm athiest, and they say "Well that's you". Fair enough, they believe it's a sin based on their paradigm, but to actively say that they find gays disgusting, like we're filthy and spread colds, is wrong. And when discussing ethics with me, they won't give me a word edge ways. When I point out the flaws in their debating style (so that I might go on to make my point), then I trounce them and they tell me "Shut up! God, you're so stupid!"
I also have an issue with two Catholic women teachers, one of wich is my form tutor, as upon discovering I was harboring a friendship with a gay student in year 10 (I'm in year 12) they had a word with us each privately warning us not to be left in a room together in case someone thinks I'm abusing him. I hope they do the same for straight students, but Stephen Guring in my year is still taking out his year 11 girlfriend.
Dispite these small and silly minorities in school, and the constant degrogatory use of the word "gay" to discribe books, lessons, and things that are bad, my school is largely accepting, and any homophobic bulllying is swiftly dealt with, usually.

I no longer go to HS, but I will say that my HS has evolved a lot too. It used to be highly homophobic (and I got gaybashed as a result) - but in the end having founded a GSA and helped out a lot I think it became a nonissue. I'd give it a 5 right now - because the issue is divided, and most don't really care.

My school was awesome. I dont think I got any stick at all (only from my little brother and his friends). If anything I got a lot more respect after I came out. The teachers were all completely great with it too.
Actually I tell a lie- the only bit of stick I got was from a teacher- and within a fortnight she was sacked.
I'll give my school a 10 - seriously it was that good.

Post edited by: kevrobinson, at: 2007/04/05 01:08

I guess about a 4-5.
Theres homophobic writing/vandalism on a door which hasnt been painted over...
There are no openly gay people.
However, there are a fare few camp/flamboyant people, and seldom get any trouble about it.

I found out today that by law all British teachers upon discovering a gay student must report them to a child protection officer. I want a change in the law.

I used to think it was a lot more accepting, but after the flagrant display of stupidity I witnessed a few weeks ago, I'm not so sure any more. English class was just starting, when someone poked their head out the door, looked in the hallway and yelled "HEY, TWO LESBIANS KISSING! GROSS!"
The whole class rushed the doorway and stared with a combined look of amazement and disgust on their faces. I was the only one left in my seat. "Straight people make out all the time, and it's just as disgusting" I said rather loudly. No one seemed to hear me -- they were too busy staring.
Since this incident I've been paying closer attention to what people say and have noticed -- on many occasions -- similar homophobic comments. My own friends are quite homophobic as well.
I have come to the conclusion that it doesn't really matter where you live or how liberal the area is, teenagers are still sexually insecure little shits. I want out of highschool as soon as possible.
