I go to a half/half kind of school; where the idiots are homophobic and us smart people aren't. I haven't come out to the school yet, but I've hinted at discussing homophobia in English class before. Luckily, most of our teachers have personal connections with students in classes, where we can express our opinions and they can theirs. None of the teachers are homophobic, in fact, most will say "don't use the word in that context" or "don't be homophobic" if a student makes a "that's gay" or homophobic remark.

In sex ed classes it gets mentioned occasionally, though not a lot. It was interesting though, there was one activity we did where the teacher said a statement and we went to different ends of the room depending on whether we agreed or not. Anyway, one question was 'would you support a friend if they told you they were gay' and most people said yes. I thought most of the people in the room were homophobic, so...they were either lying, or I was wrong

Re:Does Your School... 1 Year ago
Well I go to an all girls school, doing my 5th year there which will be my last year there before I go to college. Not once have we been taught about anything to do with homophobia etc.
Being and all girls school the typical topics of conversation are boys, boys and boys, so coming out for me especially in that environment was very hard, especially when there were like two girls who had actually come out for being bisexual, and were basically the down point for everyone at the school. I found it was generally the plastic type girls that would actually rip it out of them.
However when I did come out, everyone was really suportive and I could deffinatly tell who my real friends were. Even now I get the odd look off someone as school, or hear that someone has been bitching or calling me 'disgusting' because of my sexuality. The normal comment I get would have to be 'dirty lesbian', but all my mates who all happen to be straight all stick up for me.
The teachers do fuck all. They are all pretty up there own arse's anyways, so I have never really approached any of them about it. However if I did, i don't think they would actually take it seriously.

You see, this is what I think the main problem with the education system is. Students are tricked into thinking they're subordinate. You're not. You're the very reason for the school's existence, and as such the school has a moral duty to you. If you go to a pulic (US "Private&quot school, then parents could always threaten not to pay or to sue (because they can afford to). If in a state school (US "pulbic&quot, then I'd investigate the complaints proceedures and take it to a higher authority.

Yeah, you know it's interesting, a lot of people would assume that if somebody says "that's gay" or "faggot", they're automatically homophobic... but this isn't always the case. Sometimes people genuinely say "gay" in a negative context subconsciously. It's like when atheists say "oh my God!", "holy Hell!" or "Jesus!"

I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO KNOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH BEING GAY AND ALTHOUGH I AM STRAIGHT I HAVE BEEN BULLIED MOST OF MY LIFE BECAUSE I WAS VERY PROUD OF THE FACT THAT I WAS BROUGHT UP BY TWO GAY WOMEN AND TWO GAY MEN FOR A PERIOD OF MY LIFE. BUT OTHER PEOPLE DID NOT SEE IT AS SOMETHING TO BE PROUD OF, IT WAS SOMETHING TO BE ASHAMED OF AND I AM A MAJOR REJECT AT MY COLLEGE BECUASE I ATTEND THE LGBT SOCIETY AS A GAY FRIENDLY PERSON, OH AND BECUASE MY COUSIN IS GAY AND GETTING MARRIED AFTER CHRISTMAS TO HIS LONG TERM BOYFRIEND

Re:Does Your School... 1 Year ago
My school has nothing in any curriculum about homosexuality but it's not uncommon for the topic to brought up in class, even though it doesn't fit with any curriculum at all. Last year in bio I remember we got into a discussion about the "gay gene". And my english teacher would talk about homosexuals being perfectly equal to heterosexuals and how stupid it is for someone to care so much if someone's gay or straight. My english teacher this year brought up Matthew Shephard.

But in my opinion we need to include something about homophobia, homosexuality, or the gay rights movement in classes.
