Chuck Palahniuk. He's great! His writing is fantastic and his work is both amazing and genius. FIGHT CLUB is one of my favourite books ever!! (Funny, one of the gayest people you'll meet and one of his fav books is FIGHT CLUB and right now he is watching RAMBO o.0)
John Connolly is so amazing and underrated...the melancholy, the suspense...genius! Oh, and Stephanie Meyer is incredible too. And Trudi Canavan's books are my favourite fantasy!
probably someone English - J.G. Ballard for his late 70s-onward urban dystopias, Evelyn Waugh for his satires, Aldous Huxley for his mescaline-induced visions, maybe Orwell too for the beautiful simplicity of his prose.
Also, Fitzgerald - again, there's a beautiful clarity to his writing, particularly in TGG; not a superfluous word or sentence in the whole novel.
I can tell i'm going to like Salman Rushdie, but i've yet to read any of his novels; anyone got any thoughts on him?
I probably only enjoy Salman Rushdie for his his topics of South Asia. I didn't read "The Satanic Verses" until I finished reading the Qu'ran just to keep an open mind in his beliefs. I see him as a good author, but I'm still not one of his devout followers. Just remember he's probably the most controversial writers, and many readers see him just as that, nothing more.
I seem to stick with American authors as my favorites. I enjoy Bret Easton Ellis for his nihilistic characters and dystopian locations. F. Scott Fitzgerald stands out as an early favorite. Thomas Pynchon's works are some of my favorites as well, simply due to their complex nature.
He's not my favourite but ..... at the moment im reading Russel Brands Memoirs and although i hate the Russel... He is very talented in the 'Writing Books' department
P. G. Wodehouse all the way! Though I love Tolkien as well. And George R. R. Martin, Agatha Christie & Conan Doyle are right up there too. Not to mention Douglas Adam. Hmm, I'm too fond of too many authors =p
"Imagine a world in which generations of human beings come to believe that certain films were made by God or that specific software was coded by him. Imagine a future in which millions of our descendants murder each other over rival interpretations of Star Wars or Windows 98. Could anything -- anything -- be more ridiculous? And yet, this would be no more ridiculous
than the world we are living in." – Sam Harris

If I had to choose just one it would have to be Douglas Adams. How can you not like the author of the greatest trilogy of all times? Although the fifth part of it was a little...lol
