Re:Views on Gay Marriage 1 Year, 8 Months ago
And here is my (somewhat) controversial views on gay marriage...

I am dating someone right now, and no, I would never consider
marriage, or civil union, or anything like that.

For a while I wasn't even in favor of gay marriage. I was in favor of
equal rights, and I didn't subscribe to the separate but equal
nonsense, but I just somehow felt that it was weird. I believe that
marriage as an institution was falling apart anyway, and I wanted no
part in it. Two people should just be able to live together and
declare themselves together, period.

Maybe I'm just too cynical - I think of almost everything as a civil
contract and just balances in a book.

Of course, I don't mind gay marriage anymore - figures that if gay
people want to get married for legal or religious or social reasons,
they should be able to, even though I may find the whole institution
nonsense.

I'm not sure what the alternative is, but I guess if gay marriage is the best we can come up with, then I guess so be it.

Well I think that whatever you want to call it, marriage or unionship, there needs to be SOMETHING in place to protect the rights of a couple to BE TOGETHER. When two people fall in love overseas, they - like straight couples - should be given the ability to live together without trouble.

At present the US does not allow this very basic right, which can easily be considered separately from the rights of families, child rearing, etc. etc.
If you met your life partner overseas in the US, you would not be able to stay with them in the US.

ANYONE who disagrees with some kind of gay unionship, is TOTALLY MISSING THE POINT. If you want to be with someone for the rest of your life, you should have that right NO MATTER WHAT. Since there is no institution of union in place (i.e. state recognized relationship) for gay couples, there are many millions of people going through a hell because they cannot be with their loved ones.

It should not be this hard.

*clap* I agree hamish.

I somewhat get depressed about this topic...it shows how much the US government hates us gays, or rather, doesn't understand us...

And the US media isn't helping at all either, you know most younger people find shows like will and grace funner but some old congressman is probably disgusted by it...and while I vehemently disagree with changing the content of media to support ANY political agenda (even pro-gay) I still think hollywood could educate people better by casting more homosexuals in roles without being flamboyant of fabulous like Jack off of Will and Grace. Characters who are completely "fabulous" are very funny, but there are regular gays too, and hollywood almost completely misses that part of homosexuality

Almost all other developed first world countries legalize gay marriage but the US! We need to catch up I'm sick of the world looking down on us, because we're always last to catch up in things like this because of the damn idiotic neo conservative christians who control the vote in this country.

They remind me a lot of my dad, they don't come in contact with gays and don't understand them so they just hate them and when voting happens they just see the word gay in the question box and fill in "Nay"....

Sorry that ended up being a rant...

That's much the same way I feel. If someday, god-willing, I meet someone that I want to spend the rest of my life with, I have the right to some sort of union that offers some sort of protection against things such as immigration policies.

Fortunately I live in a country where same sex marriages are legal, I feel for you guys whose governments are too STUCK UP to allow freedom of choice, not allowing same sex marriages completely defeats the point of democracy.

As far as I'm concerned, If I wanna marry my horse I SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO DO SO!!

I think that marraige is great, but only if your commited enough to stay with them for the rest of your life. But if you are, being able to have that trust and passion between each other is something that should be given credit.

The real question is, in my opinion: Is there any reason to NOT have gay marriage?

Marriage is about love, not race, gender, religion etc

Shh! Don't tell him that! he might try... and who would want to see that? *shudders*

Not only am I pro gay marriage.. but I'm having one whether the law allows it or not.. I'm not going to let anything stand in my way. I don't care if there is no legal benefit to doing this my way... I don't need anything beyond what we have.. This marriage is more for my family than for me (the ceremony, not everything else about it ) because my dad told me long ago that he wanted to walk me down the aisle one day.. Well.. 20th of may he is gonna get that chance
