I play the organ, so I really like Bach. I also really like things like the Schumann and Grieg piano concerti. I like Russian music as well - Shostakovich, Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky. And really most choral music.

The one composer I really cannot stand, and that's Mozart - it's too perfect and too effortless.

You can't beat a bit of good ol' Rachmaninoff. A nice concerto will do me anyday.

Kills the hands thought.

I like a bit o'Tchaikowsky on the side and all. Marche Slav and all that.

Mendellsohn, now there's a legend. I well saw Nicola Benedetti perform his violin concerto at the Albert Hall. That was well good.

You can't beat a good bit of Yann Tiersen thought. That's top class.

Although sometimes Mozart rocks my socks.

But never Bach. His things are often really boring. Studying one of the Brandenburgs for my A-level, and its ritornello after f**king ritornello. I mean really, it's just repetetive.

Ugh.

But yer, John Williams, he might nick some melodies here and there, but really, could anyone write a better film score? You listen to it with the film, it blends perfectly, and absolutely. You listen to it without the film, and you become engrossed in it and still get a good idea of what might be happening in the film. I mean really, the mans a bloody genius.

Haha.

Come on you classical music whores, add me!

Well yes, frankly.
Philip Glass' Koyaanisqatsi.
Michael Nyman's The Libertine.
And Clint Mansell's Requiem for a Dream.

And dare I even say Hans Zimmer's Gladiator, Don Davis' Matrix Revolutions, and even Kenji Kawai's Ghost in the Shell.

I have always been partial to Bach but I admit I haven't listened much to classical music in a few years

Camille Saint-Saëns' Bacchanale has always been one of my personal favorites. I played it in my school symphony orchestra last year and i loved it (i had a solo too ). Besides that, most of my favorites are from more modern composers like Ron Nelson (Lux Aurumque, Savannah River Holiday, and Sleep)

I'm completely ashamed nobody has mentioned "Eine Klienen Nacht Musik" by none other than WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART!!!

Also, I think we all know that Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" is the best suite of any type of music, let alone Classical...

The "Tocata" makes me moist that's how good it is...

Hoorar!

Daniel

that made me die a little bit inside.

i might be biased though...having played about 50 weddings/receptions/galas/etc. the only thing i hate more than Eine Kleine is (not really)-pachelbel's canon(that's really a passacaglia).

to jonny again...about john williams....totally agree on the childhood memories (i think i was 9 when jurassic park came out, lol. its still one of my faves). he's copied a lot of themes, but what he does with them is genius. he's far and away my favorite film composer (next up is probably rachel portman). i generally enjoy danny elfman scores, but he's not quite john williams, in my opinion at least. and corpse bride was adorable, but i don't remember the theme off hand (i'll have a listen and report back).

on another note...oh man do the -qatsi movies drive me nuts, the imagery and the score. augh. requiem for a dream is amaaaaazing though.

oh the memories.

Gah! Silly people - film music isn't classical music! Nor is stuff played on Classic FM necessarily lol

As for me...Bach Passions, Mozart non-choral, Linley, Schumann and Schubert lieder, Brahms Chamber/Piano Concerto no.2, Sibelius anything, Wagner, all the major greats pretty much apart from Vivaldi which drives me nuts for some reason (possibly because it's all the same!!!!!). More modern stuff...Eric Whitacre, Arvo Part, probably...

Oh touche. But if you really want to split hairs, Vivaldi and Tchaikovsky et cetera aren't classical, either.

Wagner ist fascist.
