You know, i hope they NEVER find a genetic cause for being gay. If they did, they'd probably be able to identify your sexuality even before you were born. This isn't science fiction. Parents could tell with a simple test if a baby was gay or not. Would some homophobic mom have an abortion instead of giving birth to a gay baby?
I like it the way it is.. with nobody knowing what casues you to be gay. What's life without some mystery, some lack of knowledge? IF important things like your sexuality are known ahead of time, we might end up living in a world of designer babies -- how weird would that be? "Doctor, I want 4 kids: a str8 boy, a str8 girl, and the rest gay.. and they all better be blond, buff, and strong enough to take out the trash."
I say let Nature decide, without screwing around with our genes.

Some more thoughts.. and, hey, sorry i posted a double last time.
I don't think theyre ever gona find a single "gay gene." But theyre gona keep trying, cause science is science. If anything they'll find that sexual attraction is way complicated -- like a lot of different genes that make up somebody's "sexual profile." Like a guy already said in this forum, I think that we are all born "bisexual." We all like intimacy, right? Does a baby care who's fondling it or who's shoulder it barfs on?
So maybe it really is nature plus nuture, and there's no easy answer about who's going to be mainly str8 or mainly gay. I kinda like it things the way they are. Would it really be important to know who was gay and who wasn't in 2nd grade ? To me, it was only important when i pubed, and i'd had 13 years to grow and think about stuff. I'm glad my parents didn't know about my future sexuality when i was in 2nd grade. But what if it had been known from my genes that i was gay from birth? Sounds like a lotta added pressure to me! I'd hope that they could eliminate homosexuality completely. Really. No one should have to go through what we go through, eliminating the problem through genetic modification (before birth of course) would solve a lot of problems.

haha, you do put a good point, however ironic
conservative christians oppose both homosexuality AND abortion, now wouldnt that be hypocritical?

Yeah I really hope they don't find a gay gene because not only would homophobic parents try to get abortions but they'll probably classify it as a disease and try to "fix" that gene to "cure" people of their homosexuality. The way I see it, whether they find a gene or not, some ppl just aren't gonna accept homosexuals b/c they're stubborn. If there isn't a gene they're gonna say it's a choice or u were "brought up wrong". If there is a gene, they'll try abortion or tryto "fix" it. Some people will just never get it

I think that if you turn out gay, hey thats just how you are. yes it's difficult to deal with, but let them deal with it anyway. they shouldn't find out if we are gay at birth because then you would expect it. If you don't expect it then you have to fight and struggle with it and as painful as it is, it is important for us to struggle so we can survive. I say leave the genes alone and let gay people find out for themselves!

i think its a bit of both, (this next statement might sound like me agreeing with ppl that being gay is a disease i dont and any similarity is purely accdiental) its like the way that some ppl are born with a disease and others develop it l8r in life.
i know that iv always prefered guys over girls, but two of my closest frends didnt even start thinking about it till i talked them into sumstuff and after that they decided that they enjoyed it aswell and are now in a relationship together.

I think if you are truely gay that you are born that way, like its in your fate. But you can choose to be gay but not necessarily be gay. And like how Christians, no offense, think that God created everyone & that being gay is a sin. If he did create everyone he wouldn't have made something he hated.

Well my opinion is that your gay from birth but to people like bjb1557 i would say you only really notice it when puberty kicks in as thats the time that people become either way sexually inclined. Which could be backed up in my areas as most ppl come out or realise that they are gay at the ages of 12 - 18 ( roundabout the time puberty, in men at least begins )

Post edited by: jdoling, at: 2008/03/05 09:25
