This is something I feel very strongly about.
Schools should definitely teach about homosexuality. Without a doubt. I have no idea why they promote the idea of heterosexuality, and sit in Philosophy and Ethics lessons preaching about how God put us on this planet to "go forth and multiply".
What do you all think?

DEFINITELY
For instance, in Health class they taught us birth control and STI protection, but that only works for straight people and gay guys. NO mention of protection for lesbians, at all.
I think they should have mentioned homosexuality too, like the feelings gay people have about coming out, and the confusion of questioning (whether the answer you get is straight, gay or bi), and how it's perfectly normal.
One thing my school DID get right: we have one period a week called "tutoring" for the first two years, and during one period we talked about how some kids had been calling this guy "gay" because of the way he talked and walked and dressed. He's actually straight, so the problem wasn't gay-bashing. But I really liked the teacher's attitude: she got mad and said it was wrong, and the prejudice (the guy is really like the gay stereotype) was wrong too. I LOVE that teacher.

in my health class, the teacher did mention it a few times, she talked about how people cant choose who their attracked to, and she said people needed to try to be accepting of that...needless to say it diddnt go over well with most of the class, most of them were convinced she was a lesbian after that...its a pretty homophobic atmosphere, which is why they should talk about it more, and promote acceptance.

When I was at my old school, when we went into the section about protection in Health class.. the only thing my teacher told us that kind of had to do with homosexuals was that gay guys were "supposingly" the cause of AIDS and that they should wear a condom during sex. And yes, that's vital information, but then when the other students began to make jokes about the idea of two males together, she joined in the jokes and actually told a story about a former student. Saying that he was gay and this and that.
It was really terrible for me at the time because I was just coming out and I didn't know anything about myself (or even protection for me) at the time. That really could have helped me after what all has happened..
I'm really hoping that in the future they include homosexuals in the textbooks and at least provide for us out there rather than trying to act as though we don't exist.

In my health class we had one day in our sexuality unit that was all about orientations, myths, facts, terms, all that stuff. First we talked about as someone metioned earlier, who a person is attracted to, and how you can't really control that but you do control what you do about it. That led into coming out and feelings involved and what percent were out, all those facts and figures. Then we went into myths vs. facts.
At the end when we were summing up the hour she asked us if we had any out students in the school, yeah. Do we have any out teachers in the school? We said no, even though we thought she was and that's when she came out to us. She talked about why, how it felt, and most importantly how she's still her. But everyone absolutly loves this teacher that it didnt even matter. I think having her for a teacher is a really good eye opener for some people.
Also whenever any kind of dating situation came up instead of using girlfriend of boyfriend we would use partner or significant other.

i totally understand. At my school we have teachers and students that gay bash but the thing of it is, that teachers are authorities and they use it to advantage. My friends got ISS for holding hands one time and they were gay but yet everyone else could. As long as ur straight ur good to go out here. But people, when they do talk about it, if they aren't completely for it make it sound like a disease.it's like this guy. he calls me out and gay bashes me.there are othere ppl in our class with him that are my friends and he gay bashes them as well. My teacher in PE treats him like crap though because he's a problem child.I call ed him a dumb ass in front of the teacher and the guy got mad and started throwing a fit about how i should do push ups for it and teacher ignored him.lol. it was hilarious.

I never even thought about it in that way. I mean I push all teachers to talk about sex especially to the younger pupils but its not in our syllabus but I'm going to push that its there. You guys are all on the right track. Why shouldn't it be taught in our schools. I mean we've probably all had gay bashing incidents. And with knowledges prejudices can ve broken dwon as the ignorance has been aliviated

The problem with harassment because of sexual orientation is that school boards don't really believe there is a problem. We know there is a problem, because we've all experienced it. I even feel targeted sometimes because of the teachers.
For the most part, yes, I agree that it is not a big problem, and I only agree with that because there is such a small percentage of homosexuals in a school compared to heteros. But that's a huge "duh". Of course on a national scale only 10% of america is gay, so naturally even a smaller percentage in a small town is the result.
I think we shouldn't even care if the nature of harassment is severe or not. One of my classmates (we still haven't even figured out who yet) painted FAG on my car with some of that window chalk. I brought pictures I took to my principal and basically they said there's nothing they could do.
I think even if you feel harassed because people use things like "that's so gay" (because even I feel a little harassed when people say that.. I can elaborate) you should defiantely do something about it. Your school's GSA can help dealing with problems like that. If you don't have one, start one. You'd be surprised how many people are on you're side and have actually been wanting one.
That's cool you actually had an out teacher who was willing to explain homosexuality in a detailed, mature way. Some teachers are so ignorant about gay-sensitive issues.

Eh it's hard to say really, the big problem of talking about Homosexuality in schools/ educative places is the lact of maturity some people have. I go to college and I heard about a tutor who had been doing a group discussion about Homophobia with the "mechanics class", their reactions were very bad apparantly, they threw abuse and disgusting comments out. It wasn't until the end he said he was Gay himself - that's when they stopped, sniggered and continued publicaly portaying their homophobic hate. Maybe everyone isn't like this but it's an example because not everyone is understanding.
Although I do believe something should be added in Sex Education maybe, they talk about Heterosexual relationships but not everyone person in a group is straight.
