Re:Straight friends 6 Months, 1 Week ago
TBH it really doesn't bother me when people say anything like that. It's just a word and words these days have become so misused it doesnt matter. Like I doubt when somone says "that's really gay" they actually mean the object is homosexual. Likewise if you say "Oh our maths teachers a real bitch" you dont necessarily mean she is a female dog do you?

Well Í always enjoy using the term "That's strait" when referring to things i dislike. Of course it does get you some funny looks. Well that's my contribution to the topic.

It's not really about saying something is gay and meaning homosexual. It's about saying 'That's gay,' and meaning that it's tupid, or bad. People forget words are powerful.

It's about the missing connection between gay = homosexual, to gay = stupid/bad.

Gay originally meant happy.
Like someone said before, it was used as a codeword for fellow homosexuals to find each other.

But where and how has it transformed into a negative term? Using the phrase doesn't make it any less negative. It just lets other people use it and think that it's okay.

I live in a guys dorm at school, and believe me there is so much of that. Every day, multiple times I hear it, never really directed at me. Calling someone gay as an insult has really transormed into the equivilant of calling someone any other name. Its just part of people's vocabulary now. I dont mind it

Yeah i definitely cringe inside when they say it. Most of my friends that know don't say it its everyone else who doesn't know that say it and its defintiely annoying i don't see the point of it in that context.

my close friends know i don't like it when they say stuff like that. i'm not gonna make a scene about it, but i do think it just perpetuates the idea that 'gay' is 'bad.' the two words are synonymous these days, and even though i know that 99% of the time when people say it, they aren't personally insulting me or gay people in general, i still am somewhat offended. these days, little kids are calling things 'gay' who probably don't even know what the word really means, just that the older kids use it to describe something they don't like
