Check Yourself 3 Years, 5 Months ago
Guys, I know you hear about it ALL the time, believe me I get sick of it but I just thought it'd pretty important to higlight the risks of testicular problems.

To be honest the reason I've posted this topic is because of something that happened recently. Well, monday night I was sat at the computer and I started to get a pain in my groin towards my left testicle (Feel like I should be saying ball instead but you know what I mean) So I just told my Mum randomly, thinking that it was just because I had bashed it or something but she seemed a little more concerned (being a Senior Nurse and all) and rang up the DRI (Derbyshire Royal Infirmary). Thinking she was blowing it out of proportion, I was reluctantly dragged down by her and my Dad and we went straight through to accident and emergency.
I was seen pretty quickly by a doctor who, embarrassingly so, had to 'examine' me . It wasn't pleasant I must admit, but I wasn't about to shrug off the possibility of anything. He told me that it was either: a) An inflammation of the testicle, due to a travelling infection (aka the flu I had last week) or b) Torsion of the testicle; where the testicle gets twisted and starts to strangle itself in it's seminal-tubing (not pleasant, I know )
He immediately referred me to the City Hospital, to the urology department where I was to be, again, 'examined' by a urologist *shudder*...he explained that if torsion was occuring, time was of the essence. It takes only 6 hours for a testicle to strangle; cut off the blood supply and die. And yep, you guessed it, removal of the testicle
I just started to panic and was like "Okay, so what do we do now?" He said he wouldn't like to take any chances and began to prep me for theater. I was so spaced out.
One minute I'm sat at the computer with a little pain, 4 hours later I'm going down to theater for an operation.
It went pretty fast from there; wheeled down, needle and drip, blood pressure, patchy node thingies, oxygen mask and anaesthetic I was out from theater at about 3am, apparently I had woken up from the anaesthetic and ripped the needle outta my arm and then dropped to sleep again I can't remember anything......
I'm doing okay at them mo, a little sore, bruised and *ahem*swollen - I'm pretty sure they weren't THAT big to before I was lucky, it was only an inflammation. They removed the appendix of my left testicle (?) and stitched it so it wouldn't twist. Thank God no orchidectomy was needed but it was better to get it checked out. My dad said, if it was him I'd told about the pain, he would've sent me to bed with some paracetamol and rang the doctors in the morning. By then I may have been mono-ball

So guys if you feel any pain at all down below, whether its really slight or really f*****g painful get it checked out. It could be an inflammation like mine, torsion or something worse.

[By the way, if I sounded like one of those patronizing health workers called 'Jerry', I'm very sorry and you have permission to kill me.]

I'm so impressed that you had the guts to tell us all this! Some wisdom based on real experience.

Can I publish under the health section as a 'story' to make it more accessible?

Awesome post Benny!

the same thing happened to my friend in university, his got progressivley worse until i took him to hospital from where he phoned me a couple of hours later to say he was going in for the same op you had! he made a ful recovery too!

As well as just keeping an eye on pains though i think it would be a good idea for a self examination guide to be put up some place on here! i dont know what peoples feelings are on that but i had to force a friend to go to the doctors after he discoveres a lump the other week, luckily i have really open mates who talk about this stuff (even asked me to check lol) but lots of people have no idea what they should be looking for!!

anyone have any good links/info??

er, "sexy tom" i think its quite obvious what he was saying. If you get pain in your 'genital' area get it checked out!!!

My cousin had a strangulated testicle, then they found a cyst in the testicle and cut that out. NOW HE'S GOTTA BE COMPLETELY CASTRATED! So never ignore that kind of pain, its better to make a fuss about nothing than to lose one or both of your balls.

Just wanted to further stress how important it is to keep checking yourself, and much respect to Benny for sharing his painful story
