Be gay and christian 2 Months ago

Hi,
I've started going to this youth club with some friends, which is set at a church. And you read from the bible for a couple of minutes, but lately, i keep thinking i may be christian. But isn't homosexuality believed as a major sin or somthing? Can you be a christian and gay, i was going to ask one of the staff there, but i was afraid he was going to shout sinner at me and throw me out, and with me not being out this wouldn't be good lol.
Well please reply,
Thanks,
Danny

This is a topic that, no doubt, comes up in the LGBTQ community all the time. My view on it is that it shouldn't matter. I have friends who are Christian and gay/lesbian, or who support it. And actually, my friend asked her priest what was it that bothered Christians about homosexuals (she's straight, but still), and he told her that it wasn't homosexuals that bothered them, but the ACT of having sex with a member of the same gender (ooh, that rhymed!). Anyway, it's highly subjective in the religious community, and is something that has been warped/manipulated by people.
My personal view is that you can be religious and gay. I guess as long as you don't PROCLAIM it to the entire congregation, I'm sure you're fine.
Eh, probably not the best advice, but its the way I see it.

Yeah, this is something that crops up a lot of the time.
As for me, I've been a "christian" for all my life, as far as society views it. but in the past few years I've stopped going to church, and started going to youth groups more, there's more room for discussion. As for staff shouting sinner at you, he should probably know better than anyone that we're all sinners, no more or less than anyone. That's not the point. I told my pastor and all he wants is to help me fulfill my life in God, whatever that life may entail. Don't be discouraged by those in the church who might condemn you for being gay. God doesn't condemn you for it, so they have no right to either. Even if it is a sin, well, we all sin!! And we're all forgiven. Don't forget that.

I used to think it was entirely possible to be a christian and gay. But now I'm not so sure. Sorry I couldn't give you the answer you wanted like everyone else.
But really religion is what you make of it. Don't let someone else interpret it for you. Do the interpreting yourself. Good luck

Being both gay AND Christian is very possible. A lot of Christian religions define it differently, but for the most part they all say that it is not a sin. My church preaches that it is not a sin, but, as someone said earlier, it is the act that is sinful. Basically for Catholics (I'm Catholic), sex that doesn't really support pro-creation is sinful. I mean, oral sex, anal sex, sex with contraception, etc. can be considered sinful. Personally, I'm not a fan of premarital sex, but I think that sex between two men or two women who are truly in love is not sinful. And if it is, then I'd say it's much less sinful then two heterosexual teenagers having loveless sex.
The Church seems to be getting a lot more tolerant now. My parish has a gay Priest (but he's non-practice) and a gay youth leader. It really doesn't seem to be TOO big of a deal, although there are still many who disagree with it...like my parents who I'm not out to yet 0.o....
But anyway, hope this helps somewhat. I hope you find your answer and figure out that there are many ways to be gay AND Christian. Oh and check out www.gaychristian.net too. I haven't search through it too much, but I'm going through the same thing as you and someone told me this could help a lot. If you're okay with revealing your denomination or anything, I have Catholic, LDS, etc. sites too.

Well I just wanted to give input I guess. I'm Gay and I believe I'm Christian. I mean, I don't believe in it just to simply believe in something... I believe in God because I think he exists in my heart, etc. It sounds so cliche, I know. I mean, the way I see it is that... The bible was created by Man. Man, from Gods word, said that we all had sin in our hearts. If a Man made the bible, there MUST have been some misconstrued items in there, one being their bias against Gay people.

All Have Sinned and Fall Short of the Glory of God
Romans 3:23
My boyfriend is a Christian and he got Baptised last Sunday. When he came out to his minister, the minister said it was okay, and so was the trainee-minister which he came out to a few weeks ago. Neither did Jesus say anything about homosexuality by the way.

A) God himself and his intentions are the most misunderstood things in Christianity (unfortunately) therefore Christians become legalistic and blind followers. I support Christianity, hell I consider myself a Christian, I just say understand your religion and have a firm step in it.
Sorry, but I can't think "I may be Christian." Either you believe in God or not and that is that, some people need time to decide that.

Of course you can be Christian and gay. Homosexuality is never really discussed within the bible, there are only a select few passages, and when put into context, these passages are really meaningless.
The bible has been used for centuries as a way to vilify minorities, as seen with black people, slavery and the second-class citizenship of women. Unfortunately it is now being used against homosexuals.
But the churches have come a long way and this can be seen with Gene Robinson, the first openly gay ordained priest into the Episcopal Church. Catholic churches, not so much. I guess you could say Protestant churches are at least trying to kepp up with a changing society.
It's important to remember that Christianity was founded on accepting outcasts. How a church can make people outcasts and still call themselves Christians makes no sense.
