I believe but I'm not stupid 3 Years, 2 Months ago
I am a Catholic and I study in a Catholic school (It was founded by Jesuits). My family is very catholic and I've just confirmed my religion.
But I am not stupid, there are a lot of holes in believing (also in not believing), and I am sure that religion does not rule my life, it has nothing to do with my decisions and my actions, it just can guide me in some ways.
About church, I like it sometimes, it depends on the priest, he has to use philosophy in order to convinve me.
What do you think?

I think that's how religion should be. You seem to strike the perfect balance between athiest and religious nut. I like that you believe but you're not all in peoples faces about it. It's refreshing to hear you describe your religion calmly. I'm growing very tired of having Catholicism shoved down my throat from every angle .

I'm glad that you've found a religion that works for you. I'm sure it's a nice thing to have. I wouldn't know, myself.

Yeah, I was confirmed last year... And up until that time religon played a very very minor role in my life. It wasn't until I met my ex and started going to church every Sunday that I really got into religon. I'm not a nut by far...but i choose not to be an athiest any longer...

Whether religon was created as a way for ancient societies to control themselves or motivate, or whether it was created on true faith and fundamentals...I don't know, nobody will ever know probably...but, all these athiests need to rethink their position. I'm not saying that our beliefs are real, but if we didn't have our faith, where do you think society would be. Society looked and looks to faith in times of war, poverty, oppresion, famine, moral conflict, etc. and continues to do so today, maybe not on as high a level in the western world, but faith has certainly drove us here.

All I'm sayin is that instead of being athiest, choose to beleive that there's something out there and stop worrying about it. If you beleive in the slightest that there might be something out there beyond your deepest understanding, something that is so great that it has brought millions of people into a frenzy of faith and devotion, it can make your life seem a whole lot brighter. Funny, according to a poll I saw, the majority of those who said they were athiest seemed to live a pretty dark lifestyle...hmmmmm?

In spite of all the things I do, I like to think of myself as a devout little Christian boy. I use that to justify being a church drop-out. The way I define my religion changes from time to time and I think that's just the way it's gonna be. In order for religion to survive it has to conform to keep up with it's peoples.

I believe what I want to or need to at the time. Even though you can't prove these things; it's like I said, you just need to believe in some things.

That's my spin on religion this week.

a quote my brotha always sed "religion is opium for the masses" i defo blev tha! But to not have faith wot so ever must be a terrible thing.

its true wot u seed tha religion has to change and conform to fit wot the public want but then also should it change? i don't think its rite to jus pick and choose bits of religion, but tha str8s do it so why cant we!

it seems ev1 who replied to this mesg is a catholic...i soo hope tha that religion is wrong not really feeling hell rite now!

But then again im sure tha there would be a lo of str8s down there with us to if tha was the case hey?

neway im totally runnin off at the mouth!

il jus end on a quote (or there abouts!) from dogma "its not to have a belief, but to just have a good idea!"

Xx

Okay firstly, jpvillai, i completely agree with you and wish everyone with a faith took your approach, or at least one not so different. It's nice to see someone forward thinking who can also have a faith.
Now im going to have a go at _m1k3_k3nn3dy_ for all the crap he said.

how about you get off your horse and stop telling people what they should and shouldn't believe. yes, faith works out really well for some people, but im getting on quite well with not having a faith; haven't raped, killed or mugged anyone to date.

you're claiming faith is the solution to war, oppresion, famine and moral conflict? lets do a check of how religion is working out for all the starving africans? or should we tally up all the wars caused by religion? or perhaps see if anyone's spotted oppression on religious grounds?

religion didn't get women equality (check out Pakistan and it's helpful Shariah Law), nor blacks rights (The KKK is a radical christian organisation), and it certainly isn't backing up gay people (The Almighty WBC, or the Pope)
i don't understand how you can credit it with so much good when it causes at least as much bad! and all you seem to be saying is that good things only happen because of religion! as if to say that people can only care and have good morals if they have a faith! well i don't have a faith, but i still care about people. it bothers me that people are starving, dying and in pain all across the world, and don't you dare tell me that my lack of faith makes me any less able to feel than you just because you have found god.

oh, and

What exctly is a dark lifestyle? Because i'd wager there are plenty of people willing to describe homosexuality as a 'dark lifestyle'.
But seeing as how you don't seem to want to mention any details, i will.
In the last 30 years over 4000 people have been executed in Iraq for being gay. In Iran, girls as young as 9 can be executed for homosexuality (for boys it's 14). In Pakistan, a woman is raped every two hours and gang-raped every eight, yet if she can't provide four male witnesses to her rape, she's tried for adultery. This is all in accordance with Shariah Law. Oh, and if you want some info on bad things Christians have done, let's try the thousands of dead arabs from the crusades, or perhaps all the dead 'witches'?

i may not believe the same things other people, but i respect their beliefs and the fact that they have them, do me the same fucking courtesy
