Hi I play all Brass and Piano/Keyboard so you could say that I'm a band geek. I'm a level 4 on all of the instruments I started when I was 7 and I'm 14 now turning 15 so I've been playing for a while. I'm in the R.C.B.B (Rockhampton City Brass Band) I play Rep Cornet, I'm also in Big Jazz Band I play 1st Trumpet in that then there is, Concert band and I play Euphonium in that and finally I'm in the R.Y.O (Rockhampton Youth Orchestra) I play Tuba in that. I hope I didn't bore you guy's to death . Ohh and one last thing I own all of my instrument from Grand Piano to Tuba my room is pretty full at the moment.

Hollaaa!

My musical journey began by playing piano, until 6th grade when I joined the middle school "jazz band" (a term used loosely, you can only play Tequila and The Final Countdown so many times to be considered jazz). I played the keyboard bass which is a terrible waste of plastic and electricity. Terrible sounding. Then I got to be in the honor guard of the middle school marching band, and my freshman year as well in the highschool band.

But I now play tuba! Going on my third year, totally rock it. I also play guitar now.

But band=awesome. My marching band is heading to Ireland (Dublin and Limerick) next year to march in the city's St. patrick's Day Parade. AWESOME! Haha

Yes! I played clarinet since 6th grade, then played trumpet this past marching band season. Now I've switched to French Horn, and it ROCKS. I'm never touching my clarinet again.

Re:Any Band geeks out There ? 1 Year, 7 Months ago
omg.
I'm one of the bandnerd kings. I'm serious.
I didn't get to start band until 7th grade.
I was supposed to start out on tuba because the school that I went to needed a tuba player. So I showed up 2 days before the school year started at the band room during an orientation. I was supposed to try out on tuba to see how if felt for me.
Well, my band director couldn't find any mouthpieces for tuba. She gave me a baritone instead and told me to take it home. So I did.
I practiced for a few hours each day hitting the 3 main partials, which took alot of effort for me.
haha.
And once school started, she was happy to see my advancement.
Now, before all this, I had really seen in person, much less touched, any wind instrument. It was my first experience with them.
I had, however, played piano since age 4.
I wasn't one of the kids who took piano lessons because my parents made me, I just learned everything by ear. I only took lessons for about 4 months. Up until that point, at which I was probably about 11 or 12, I had learned all sorts of things by ear. Songs like Mozart's Turkish March, Beethoven's Fur Elise. I didn't realize how much of an accomplishment that was at the time.
So, back to the story.
Only about a month and a half had passed and my band director noticed how fast I was progressing and how well I was starting to play. She told me to try out for something called an honor band. At the time, since I was so young, I could only try out for the youth honor band. The procedure for the honor band was this: depending on what instrument you were trying out on, you'd go up against people of that same instrument in 9 parishes. (yes, it's Louisiana.) Most of them were good, some of them were not so good. But, they all had 2 things in common.
1) They all wanted to be in the honor band.
2) They had all been in band, most likely on the same instrument, since 5th grade.

So I tried out. I was a nervous wreck. I thought I was going to blow it.
Well, I got a call that night saying that I was first chair out of 9!
I was pretty surprised.
Ever since then I have always made first chair on honor bands, and now I do the senior high honor bands, which are MUCH harder to make.
The year after that, I started playing tuba because my band, once again, needed a tuba player.
I was phenomenal on tuba. Still today, tuba's my main instrument.
I joined community band in Winter 05. At first, they had no idea how good I was. They thought that some kid was just there to try to be cool or something. They stuck me on the bell chimes and in percussion for that entire season. Now I'm their principal tuba player.
Needless to say, because all band nerds do this, I've started just about every single instrument there is. The only exceptions are oboe and tenor sax. I play everything else. I've also, at one time or another, been the community band's pianist, one of their bassoons, one of their french horns, one of their baritones. Plus the mallet and battery percussion.
I've also joined the gifted and talented band program at my high school, and I'm looking into going into the New Orleans School of Arts for mainly piano since I now play everything up to advanced Chopin.
I must say, too, that I enjoy marching band.
I've only done it for one year, but it's pretty cool.
I really think it could have been better, though, but that's probably because I marched it with tuba. (Which I might recommend anyone on this forum to NEVER do.)
