This year sees the 20th anniversary of the third largest film festival in the United Kingdom. Until the 12th of April and before a national tour throughout May to September, London is host to the bfi London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. Established in 1986, the festival offers a diverse programme of films made by and about Lesbian and Gay people. The festival offers an unrivalled platform for the very best in Lesbian and Gay Cinema from all across the world and attracts audiences of over 25,000 people. For the past two decades the festival has successfully inspired and supported gay filmmakers as well as showcasing the rich diversity of gay and lesbian life.
With screenings at the National Film Theatre on London’s South Bank, the festival stands out as a major arts festival and enables those individuals with a passion for cinema and a story to tell to bring their ideas to a world stage. This year is special, as the festival’s 20th anniversary has inspired a programme of films that are consistently imaginative, varied and original, effectively presenting the exciting vibrancy of gay culture.
Especially exciting this year is the festival’s focus on gay youth culture with a series of films made by and about young lesbian and gay individuals. Senior LLGFF programmer Jonathan Keane says, “In an increasingly visual world, it is vital that young people develop the skills to both create and analyse visual media”. With an emphasis upon short films made by young gay filmmakers, the festival encourages a younger audience to experience certain issues in an accessible way and invites them to perhaps notice something universal in their own personal experience of being a gay youth.
