.jpg) ©Barnardo's As a leading children's charity, Barnardo's work directly with over 110,000 children, young people and their families every year. Running over 383 vital projects across the UK, Barnaro's help some of the most vulnerable children and young people believe in themselves and their future. Whatever the issue; from family drug misuse to disability; from youth crime to mental health; sexual abuse to domestic violence; Barnardo’s believes the best can be brought out in every child, and that all children deserve the chance to fulfil their potential.
Barnardo’s have just launched a new campaign called ‘Believe in Children’, which aims to re-establish Barnardo’s ethos: that it tirelessly supports the UK’s most vulnerable children. The campaign aims to challenge the public’s perception of children whilst inspiring them to support the charity. Here at the GYC we are determined in our encouragement of all young people to realise their full potential and escape any oppression or lack of opportunity they face. Yet many of us are lucky in that we are given the support of loved ones and are able in time to live our lives liberated and safe; this is sadly not the case for so many young people and therefore this new Barnardo's campaign has our full support.
BARNARDO’S NEW CAMPAIGN WARNS THE NEW BRITISH PRIME MINISTER: BELIEVE IN CHILDREN OR “LOSE A GENERATION” A new NOP poll commissioned by Barnardo’s demonstrates the extent to which so many adults have given up on children: One in four adults think that children who are disruptive or antisocial are beyond long term help by the time they are just 13. Two thirds of adults are convinced that children are more criminal now than ever before, when in fact there has been a substantial drop in youth crime since 1995.
Barnardo’s is not naďve. The charity realises that too many of the children it works with can be difficult, often unpleasant, frequently uncooperative. But all are redeemable. To try and change this Barnardo's is launching a new advertising campaign and report to demonstrate that even the most difficult problems, the most difficult behaviour and the most difficult children can be helped. Their lives can be fundamentally changed, with enough determination, expertise, tolerance and compassion.
A large part of this new campaign is a specially made short film entitled the F**k Off Story. The online film features a moving portrayal of a young boy who told everyone to f**k off, including his parents, foster parents and numerous social workers. He also told Barnardo’s to ‘f’ off, but because of their determination and belief in him they didn’t. As much as we as members of the LGBT community come face to face with still widespread intolerance and ignorance to our hope in being seen as equal we enjoy the relative freedoms of society. It is time to address those young people who do not have that luxury and have little to no support in growing up whilst enjoying their childhood.
You can show your support to the new campaign by watching the short film (click on the link above) and then spending some time reading about the campaign on the Barnardo's website. Thanks for your time, The GYC Team
