.jpg) ©Darenote Ltd 2004 This year has seen an exciting new exhibition which focusses on one of the most fascinating gay icons of all time: Kylie Minogue. From the early days of playing Charlene in Neighbours (1988) through to her most recent incarnations on her Homecoming tour, Kylie has always been not only an icon of style, popular culture and music but also a true gay icon. The Kylie exhibition which is currently at the V&A Museum in London shall be moving up north and feature largely in the Manchester Pride festivities. Running from the 30th of June to the 2nd of September, you will have plenty of time to head along to this free exhibition to see over 200 objects relating to Kylie's performing career. What's more is that as part of the Big Weekend which runs from the 24th to the 27th of August, there will be a host of special talks focusing on Kylie's reign as popular gay icon.
The exhibition, sponsored by Evian will be the focus of Manchester Art Gallery's major summer exhibition and will specifically look at 'how Kylie, as a performer, has used her wardrobe to create an image that is known worldwide'. The exhibition will include over 200 objects relating to Kylie and her performing career and will include over 60 photographs as well as 45 costumes from live performances and videos as well as public appearances. Coinciding with Manchester Pride is a talk given by Dr Sharif Mowlabocus from the University of Sussex entitled, Kylie: The Ultimate Gay Icon? The talk, which is free, will explore gay icons of past and present and will be held on Thursday 23rd of August from 2-3pm. You can book a place at the talk by calling 0161 235 8855 or emailing

The exhibition really is worth seeing and being free means that there are likely to be times when it is extremely busy, however, if you love Kylie, fashion or just want to see how a true 21st Century Gay Icon has evolved over the past twenty years then get down to the Manchester Art Gallery which is situated on Mosley Street in Manchester's city centre. If you have been lucky enough to see the exhibition in London then please feel free to leave a comment telling us and the members of the GYC.com what you thought of it.
