ImageFor two weeks, from the 21st of March through to the 4th of April, the BFI 21st London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival dominates the schedules at the National Film Theatre on London's South Bank.  Following on from last year's coverage here on the GYC we are committed to bringing you the latest from the festival alongside film reviews and discussions on the themes that some of the programme explores.  Keep an eye out over the next week as the home page will be updated frequently and we shall encourage feedback from you all on the issues raised.

The 21st London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival this year is perhaps the most diverse it has ever been in terms of programming.  Not only are there a great deal of films focussing on gay youth and exploring issues of desire and coming out, but also films that examine adolescence and addiction, the femme and lesbian culture, transgender debates and most interestingly interactions between race and sexuality looking specifically at experiences of gay black men.

This year the festival has added significance as it is housed in the totally refurbished National Film Theatre on the South Bank in London, the new premises mean that there are greater facilities for showing the films and also to accommodate the events that run alongside the festival.  The opening and closing night gala performances are once again being shown at the Odeon West End bringing the festival to a broader audience and enabling its success in the capital.

The festival prides itself on establishing and cultivating 'the union of queer filmmaking and audiences' and is the UK's third largest International film festival.  With audience numbers reaching 250,000 and playing host to hundreds of visiting filmmakers from across the globe, as well as displaying an eclectic mix of British, European and World cinema, the festival continues to 'celebrate the diversity of lesbian and gay culture'.

Here at the GYC we are committed to bringing you the latest from all aspects of gay culture and have come to view the festival as a vital part of a developing gay culture here in the UK and abroad.  Celebrating the diversity of these films is important as it encourages us all to not only connect with the perspectives of those filmmakers within the gay community but also hopefully to develop our own personal interactions and reflections on the themes that they raise.

As well as following the festival here on the GYC you can check out all of the latest from the NFT and read reviews of all the films on the festival website (www.llgff.org.uk) Also, have you made it along to see any of the films so far?  Are you planning to?  If so, then please feel free to email us here at the GYC with your own reviews or opinions on the festival and we may even get them published along with our own coverage.  Please send any contributions to us at the following email address This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
