ImageIn a world where being able to be heard is getting increasingly difficult and where language is clearly evolving around us, so do our uses of well established words.  Take for example the words used to describe homosexuals: queer, poof, homo, batty and most common of all, gay.  Our world is one of associations and therefore we label what we see around us.  However, do we ever stop to consider the suitability of our language?  In modern society is the word gay a term of endearment or is it infact passively aggressive?

Gay of course has a duality of meaning.  It is used to express happiness and used to define homosexuality.  It therefore has become colloquial and is widely used to label a whole section of society.  However, if gay can mean happy, why is it uttered negatively and more recently to suggest something inferior?

We have all been there; standing in the playground at school or walking down the street when somebody has yelled out “hey, gay boy!”  How has this made you feel?  I am guessing you did not assume that you were being commended for your happy demeanour but instead recognised that you were being noticed as bearing resemblance to a homosexual.  It is sadly true that the word gay has been adopted by those who wish to offend and insult those of us who are attracted to the same sex as ourselves.

Popular culture of course plays a large part in the assimilation into the language of slang terms and phrases.  To this we must place a large duty of care over those in the entertainment industries and therefore under public scrutiny.  As a case in point the Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles recently described a ringtone as being “gay” and sparked his bosses to defend him as not being homophobic but using the word quite differently, (for in their minds the word gay has recently been attached to meaning “lame” or “rubbish”).  Whether or not Moyles is homophobic is not a matter to be discussed here but what I think is more interesting and would like to consider, is why gay should ever mean lame or rubbish.

How does a word change its meaning?  This is a complex consideration and perhaps an over simplification.  A word may never change its meaning, simply adopt new ones.  Therefore the word gay has gone from meaning happy, to meaning homosexual and worryingly, more recently seems to being used to describe anything that is inferior or “rubbish”.  The danger in this is that if connections are made across the meanings homosexuality can be seen as “rubbish” or inferior, or perhaps this is where the latest meaning came from?

If new meanings are born then they must be the product of something else.  Therefore for gay to mean “rubbish” it must have initially been associated with and then attached to things that are rubbish.  Of course this is not a giant leap to make.  Homosexuality is indeed a social sub group and gay men and women are in a minority, perhaps then in recent times, along with the prejudices faced by us all at different times and in different forms the word gay has been hijacked and moulded into something far more sinister.

Let us not deny that we self label ourselves as gay, it is not the association between the word and homosexuality that is offensive.  It is now that the word seems to be evolving in its meaning that we should stand up and contest it.  Especially as a gay youth coming into a society where you may have to defend your ambitions and sometimes even your existence it is quite right that you do not allow others to label you as inferior.

Obviously, being labelled as inferior implies that the accuser is superior.  However, it is most likely that the reverse is true.  What with the power of the pink pound at its strongest and great social liberation gay men and women are constantly proving that they are no worse equipped than their heterosexual contemporaries.  One only has to look around at those gay men who are making great successes of themselves in the arts and entertainment industries.  Gay men and women are suddenly successful and therefore, perhaps as an act of defiance heterosexual individuals are trying to suppress any sense of success or betterment?  Whatever the motivation behind such linguistic evolution, don’t let the word gay mean “rubbish” or “lame” make it mean “strong” and “proud”.

There are some insults surrounding homosexuality that bother me, but 'gay' isn't one of them. Shortly after I came out my friends would constantly catch themselves, and it was me who told them not to. I know that they don't mean it offensively, it has quite simply adopted a whole new meaning. It's not a word I ever use (as an insult) but it doesn't bother me when others use it unless it is directed at me with intent to upset me. xxx

I'm 16 and straight acting, but the people at school who know im gay call me queer and gay boy in a jokey way! i dont have a problem with it - if someone uses it offensively i just think that they should go and find some more effective vocabulary and then try to insult me!

Thanks for the article!

Honestly, I use the term "that's so gay" in everyday conversation. When I say it, I clearly don't mean that something is homosexual.lol. What we all need to realize is that over time, words will either adopt, or change definitions altogether. Just like the word gay went from meaning "happy" to meaning "homosexual", its now begining to mean "corny" or "lame". However, over use of the word can be bad though. When it is used to the point where you make someone feel uncomfortable, you should stop. But, if someone is make you feel that way, tell them. I'm sure they'll stop. In the end, the phrase "that's so gay" shouldn't be offensive. People who get upset about the term just need to chill out!

Personally, it doesn't bother me. I guess I just know that when people say "that's so gay" they don't mean homosexual. I mean, the word past has how many meanings ? Why can't gay have more than one meaning ?

I personally hate when people say that. My family says it a lot around me knowing well that I'm Gay and they wonder why I get pissed when they say it around me. They also like to use words like "Fag" or "Cocksucker"

i have to say i really do use the word gay in the context of something being rubbish because that is one of the meanings that the word has now. Like people have said, language evolves, it takes on different meanings, gay never used to mean rubbish but it didn't used to mean being homosexual either. if you think about it we as gay community have sort of commandeered the word 'gay' anyway!

I'm not happy when people say it, but it's said so often that I don't think I could possibly tell everyone not to without spending my entire time moaning at people. I think there should be talks in schools about homosexuality and stuff, like they have talks on Sex Ed. and from firefighters and things. People don't realise how offensive they are being sometimes.

i hate hearing the word honestly. the biggest problem is at my school. its a small town, and i am the only homesexual in this town, but everyone continues to use the word gay as an insult, and it just makes me angry. they argue that they dont mean to offend me, but it doesnt stop there. they do use a three lettered word, alot. i just dont understand why homosexuls have to put up with hearing these words that offend us.

I'm glad this has been brohught up. In our rural school in Somerset, UK, we are currently tackling this issue as a form of bullying to our homosexual students (admitedly there are only about 10 of us out of 1300 but oh well), as "gay" is becomming a subsitute for words such as "crap" or "rubbish" which students would have previously used to indicate they did not like something. Now its "oh this is gay Miss" or "Oh your so Gay!" - and one specific teacher noticed it along with myself, and now management have caught wind of it, and we're cracking down! Now I'm in sixform, so it's easier on me slightly, and I recognise where the problems are coming up, but for some of our younger school members, it probably isn't so hard to express their concern over such a word being used in their classroom by obviously less mature students.

Thank god its being sorted rather swiftly... nobody will ever utter "gay" in my lessons again...hopefully :)

I think to myself every time i hear the word 'Gay' that people are trying to offend other people even if they are not gay.

I think that because it had become incresingly harder to 'come out' but i say if some one calls you gay and you are whats the insult in that? :?

Making it harder!
With all this 'OMG that is gay' and 'F*** off you gay t***' I personally am finding it increasingly difficult to come out to my friends at school. How do you feel when someone unknowingly starts yelling abuse at homosexuals?

Personally I dont stand up for myself when someone says "Omg thats so gay". Tho I used to say "Not...literally....its just the tree" ya know? Point out the ridiculousness of it all! Instead of saying
"That cat is being gay"
say
"That cat is certinly being odd today."
Full sentence, all sense.

Youth Culture
In my opinion, it is those, whose vocabulary range is limited, that chose to use the word "gay" in a derogatory and inferior manner. I'm sure they don't actively mean that when the toaster has broken, it must be a homosexual, but I think that as something that has, and still is, seen as a subnormal act, homosexuality has been branded alongside inanimate objects that don't seem to be in working order.

I take little offence from people that use the word in such a context - I'm sure they're not being horrendous towards me - it's just something that 'sticks' with youths, like many things. That said, though, I do experience the 'internal wince', as formentioned.

why worry
why worry what people think about you if your happy about who you are then f**k everybody else, its got nothing to do with anyone wat you want to be aoart from your self, so if you let it get to yuo they are just going to do it more and more and more until evertually they get to you that much that u either do something to ur self or you say soemthing bak to them then they beat you up so its best just to ignore it and walk on but dont let it get you down ever because its only people with nothing better to do that shout gay to you, theres people out there who arent gay and that are being called gay i mean imagine how they feel, its because some people are more feminine than others or sometimes they look after them selves more than others so......JUST IGNORE THEM :grin

why worry
the association of the work "gay" and inferiority is a very valid one. As stated in the article, homosexual men or women can easily occupy positions of authority. Recently a South African supreme court judge came out of the closet and publicly stated he is gay. He's one of the most powerful men in the country :p

Gay
personally, i think it depends on the topic of wich the word is used and the person who uses it. if its your friends that is just joking and says "you're so gay!" as a little friendly joke, then it's okay. personally, i dont take gay as an insult, but the word "Fag" or "Faggot" i take more seriously.

GAY
Personally i believe words are only what you make of them. I could care less what others think about my sexuality not even my parents. My dad makes digs at me all the time and a just take it in stride. ANd my peers at school know i dont care. They once wrot the word fag on my shirt while i was sleeping in class. I did not get mad instead i got my calligraphy pen out and wrote AND PROUD underneath. As long as you accept what you are then its all good it doesnt matter what other think. Well that's all folksnull

True Meaning Of The Word
Gay, means Carefree, outgoing, or showy. the word was adapted in the late 1930's to describe a west end act of Homosexual men who were carefree and showy henceforth gay sort of stuck as a way to describe homosexuals, it was also adapted in the early 90's to describe dangerously outgoing "bright" and "flamboyant" items, things that a typical straight man would not buy for example a pair of flourescent hot pants, would be described as they are so gay i am not buying those.... hence the word, like many words in the english language, has evolved to mean many things, these being, happy, lame, bright, outgoing, flamboyant, showy and yes homosexual... there is no need to take offence, just lighten up and take things easy, unless you want to be thought of as a "LAME GAY"
