Avril PDF Print E-mail

Written by Rob Drummer

ImageIt is a pleasure to be reviewing a film that manages to have gay characters throughout that don’t stand out, aren’t reliant upon camp or merely included for comedy effect. Avril, the latest release from Peccadillo Pictures is a touching light hearted look at how a person can change their destiny when passion is unlocked. Directed by Gérald Hustache-Mathieu and starring Sophie Quinton as Avril, a young nun about to take her eternal vows, the film is a heart warming tale of siblings separated at birth and what happens when they finally find each other.

ImageThere is an increasing concern amongst the gay community about the number of young LGBT youths self harming.  There has been plenty of awareness raised focussing on the age group most likely to self harm but little has been done to look specifiically at the incidence rate in the gay community, Until now.  The GYC has teamed up with LifeSIGNS, Self Injury Guidance & Network Support who have kindly written the article that contines below.  Here at the GYC we are passionately interested in all of the issues that face young LGBT youths as they make their decisions in life and come out to those around them.  Should you have any concerns for a friend, or just need some advice yourself then please do not hesitate to get in touch with LifeSIGNS directly, or the GYC who will gladly point you in the direction of any relevant advice.

A Touch of Pink PDF Print E-mail

Arts Reviews

Image What is often so refreshing about gay films is their treatment of diversity and the complications that being different inspire.  A Touch of Pink, starring Jimi Mistry (The Guru) takes the idea of difference and extends it into a truly comic story of life, love, family and the classic films of old Hollywood.  Alim is a young Ismaili Canadian living in London with his boyfriend, Giles, enjoying everything that the big city can offer.  However, his passion for classic cinema has lead him to rely upon the assistance of Cary Grant who is a constant figure throughout the film.  Whether Grant is an angel or a figment of Alim's mind is not clear, or does it matter as he provides an insight into the romantic ideals of the film.  Sometimes, the comments from Grant distract from the sense of reality but once you accept his presence the comedy of the film begins to take hold.

Hero: A Novel by Perry Moore PDF Print E-mail

ImageOn the surface, Hero appears to be another stereotypical, whiny tale about a young teenager’s journey developing his superpowers and uncovering secrets from his past that will change his life forever. It’s been done, buried and revived a thousand times and I can honestly say I was sceptical in reading yet another superhero’s story. But after reading the first few pages, I could instantly tell that Moore’s idea had depth and character, which makes it more engaging than any book I’ve read for a while.
