ImageThis year, the year of the spectacular at Bestival, on the Isle of Wight was the usual mix of exceptional music, great experiences, new friends and of course the amazing show of fancy dress!  Everywhere we looked, from the moment we arrived, the campsites, main stage and dance tents were full of glitter, sparkle and space themed spectacular outfits!  The GYC was covering the festival all weekend and we made sure we joined in with the fancy dress theme!

imogen heap album coverImogen Heap’s latest album, Ellipse is set to be the final, deserved breakthrough for an artist who has spent her career to date building and responding to a large fan base through social networking sites.  Heap’s music consistently delivers in terms of soaring vocals and carefully orchestrated yet beautifully eloquent arrangements and Ellipse is the natural successor to her previous albums.  Furthermore, through collaborating with, amongst others, theatre makers Frantic Assembly in the UK, Heap has managed to connect her music with readily available youth and mainstream culture.  Hailed as the original queen of the download, Heap now moves closer to the recognition she deserves with an album consistently full of emotive tracks that never dwell on whim.  Rather, these tracks suggest a careful, determined focus on pushing an individual style which does Heap’s observations of the world around her justice.

ImageThe Stonewall riots of June 28, 1969 were the first real turning point for a gay rights movement and signalled a direct call to action for all gay men and women around the world to fight for their place in society.  The riots themselves lasted throughout the week and although violent were sparked by years of oppression and contempt towards homosexual individuals.  Even today these riots are remembered each year around the world by the numerous Pride events that often fall at the end of June or early in July to ensure that the significance of the Stonewall riots and what preceded is not forgotten.  It is the events that built towards that night of June 28 that are the focus of the fascinating documentary Before Stonewall (released on DVD 22nd June).  The documentary, through archive interviews and a thorough and brilliantly well researched look into the building tensions in American society throughout the 50s and 60s is a must see for the generations who cannot remember a time when being homosexual was illegal deemed immoral and classified as a mental illness.

ImageThis summer, London's National Portrait Gallery will be exhibiting 60 portraits of those men and women seen as Gay Icons.  The exhibition is the first to celebrate the contribution of gay icons to history and culture and all of the portraits have been selected by public figures from the gay community.  These portraits in being shown together will allow visitors to the gallery a rare opportunity to see those men and women who have shaped not only gay culture but have impacted upon culture as a whole, historically.  The exhibition runs from the 2nd July - 18th October 2009 at the Porter Gallery in London's National Portrait Gallery.
