Me too actually. Was slightly apprehensive of the sorts of people I would meet here. You know, I tell people in real life what I do and they suddenly get a glazed over look in their eyes. But I guess the GYC is a large enough statistical population so there's going to be a large cross section of society represented. And now that I'm talking statistics I'll leave this here and go get breakfast.

Well my undergraduate degree is 4years an I'll come out with an MPhys. I finish that in June at the age of 22. Then provided I don't commit academic suicide and totally screw up, I'll be staying on to do a PhD. Both the PhD and undergraduate degree's at the University of Warwick, England.
High energy physics, eh? I'm having to sit a couple of exams this year that pertain to high energy physics. Pretty interesting stuff but not for me. =( So good luck to your friend!

hehe. I was probably a bit ambiguous in my last post. Physics is still my career - I start a PhD in July, researching in magnetic semiconductors. But I guess there's still a child-like enthusiasm for the subject, which I guess stems from having Richard Feynman as my idol. And whilst the money won't be great, hopefully it will get better as time goes on. My ultimate goal though is to lecture at university - money there isn't as good as in industry or the commercial sector, but I rather fancy the idea of lecturing to newbies the wonders of physics.

heh. Thanks! Physics is what I do though. Except to me it's more of a passion than a career. Always was an inquisitive kid, and although I didn't manage to reach the stars (is that every kids dream, or am I just special? ) and settled for something slightly more mundane, I still adore physics and exploring the many facets of the reality we're presented.
Anyway, you're not so bad yourself, being and all mathematician Are you doing a PhD? Research? Have a job somewhere? Specialise in anything in particular?
