ridiculous
it truly makes no sense that in such advanced societies as we have, sexually active gay/bi men are barred from donating blood. Canadian Blood Services has the same policy here of permanently deferring males who've had sex with men since 1977. i wasn't aware of it prior to going to donate, so i was really quite crushed and disappointed in learning this. here i thought i was doing something good, but no, they don't want it. it is stupid to assume all gay/bi men are going to taint the blood supplies with HIV/AIDS. in Canada, all donated blood i believe is screened for it anyways.
with the apparent shortages of blood, plasmas, marrow, and other donations collected by the Blood Services, it's foolish that they would automatically cut out a large portion of the otherwise eligible population. one of my friends has the rarest blood type, but since he's gay, he can't donate now.
i was told once that the Blood Services have free range to make their own rules, but i'm certain it will show up at the human rights tribunals.. :roll
