I wouldn't say an attracting to the atypical societally accepted gender is a small thing. No kids, no grandkids, present day minor and occasional major persecution, I think some people like to down play it all. 
 
I see very little insulting about people using the term 'gay' to describe something rubbish or bad. In this context the term's usually used to describe objects other than humans, so confusion between the two meanings is highly improbable; after all, no one's confusing 'fair' being fair skinned and 'fair' being just.
