Youth Culture
In my opinion, it is those, whose vocabulary range is limited, that chose to use the word "gay" in a derogatory and inferior manner. I'm sure they don't actively mean that when the toaster has broken, it must be a homosexual, but I think that as something that has, and still is, seen as a subnormal act, homosexuality has been branded alongside inanimate objects that don't seem to be in working order. 
 
I take little offence from people that use the word in such a context - I'm sure they're not being horrendous towards me - it's just something that 'sticks' with youths, like many things. That said, though, I do experience the 'internal wince', as formentioned.
